I thought I'd make a topic for anyone to discuss road trips they may be going on in the near future. I myself am driving from UTD in Richardson, TX to OU in Norman, OK on Friday. I have a few friends at OU that wanted me to visit. This whole trip is contradictory to my nature. I hate driving, I hate going blindly into situations (particularly social situations), and so forth. I'm doing it though. It should be interesting. It'll probably be about a 3 hour drive, which isn't horribly bad (considering my drive home from UTD is 4 hours or more). I look forward to seeing my friends, but yet I'm too anxious and stressed about it. Crazy stuff. Anyone else going on any road trips soon?

I love driving, but I'm with you about going into unfamiliar social situations, unless I have someone with me who allows me to relax. I'm always reluctant, although I often find that I have a good time and meet nifty people, and that afterward I'm glad I went. I hope it goes well for you.
I'm contemplating a 4-hour trip to the LA area over thanksgiving, and I'll be driving about 11 hours to Northern Utah over Christmas. I'm hoping to have some company on that one -- there's a girl in my YSA group here who has family in Southern Idaho, and she's indicated she may want to carpool.

One of our family secrets for long road trips is Harry Potter on tape. My parents own all six, and I've listened to all but the last one two or three times each. Any good book on tape (or CD) will do (assuming the reader is good -- this can make or break the experience), but the Harry Potter books are so reliably wonderful that we keep coming back to them.
However, you have to be considerate if you're with company -- not everyone enjoys the whole books-on-tape-in-the-car-for-hours-on-end experience.

I don't particularly care for Harry Potter. Perhaps I could purchase an audiobook of iTunes though before my trip and upload it to my iPod. It might be a good idea (depending on the cost of the audiobook).

In addition to music, I have about 36 hours of standup comedy. I usually listen to standup for an entire day of a road trip to keep from getting sick of the music. Of course, these were road trips from Louisiana to Montana.

I have about 19 hours of music on my iPod. I used to have a few hours of Japanese lessons too, although I removed those (since they messed up the whole shuffle aspect when listening to music).

In December, I will be making a road trip from Chicago, IL to Tampa, FL. It will then be followed with a drive from Tampa, FL to New Orleans, LA.

For long road trips I find audiobooks passes the time better than music. I highly recommend the Hitchhiker's Guide books as read by Douglas Adams himself. If you must have music, new music you don't already know by heart is best.

Which Rob Thomas single? And if I didn't already have the Hitchhiker's Guide books, I would definitely pick up the audiobook version. As it is, I don't know if I can justify that purchase in my head.

There is a better option than buying audio books...rent them from a Cracker Barrel! You buy it, but you return it at ANY Cracker Barrel anywhere in the USA and get a rebate. The rebate depends on how long you have had teh tape, but it works well if you are driving anywhere in the South in particular....there are Cracker Barrel's everywhere around the south, and they are even up north now.
I only know about this because I worked at one, but I think it is great.

Well if there was a Cracker Barrel right on my way out and right on my way in, I might do it. I'm not sure where the nearest Cracker Barrel is though in relation to me.
