Now, be nice to me -- I tried googling it with various pertinent qualifiers, but everything I found was either about an insect or the words "may fly."

Is this a Hatrack term or some kind of universal Internet slang?

I've often wondered the same thing, but have never been curious enough to actually click on one of the threads that say "Mayfly" in them.

Maybe if I would do some more reading and actually figure out what a mayfly is used for in fly fishing I'd be able to figure it out--but I'm lazy and would rather have someone 'splain it to me!

I've wondered that myself. The threads didn't help much, though.

A "mayfly" is a post that will probably be deleted soon, by the person who started the post. It is intended for getting a quick answer, perhaps, or for "putting a shout out" to another member.

It is called mayfly after the bug of the same name that has a remarkably short lifespan.

Thanks, that makes sense! Is it a Hatrack term or more widespread than that?

I think CT invented it. It's hatrack only, unless it's spread from here.

The meme may have infected some of the other forums that members hang out on.
