How do we make a historical costume drama seem hip and appealing? Easy! We add an incredibly 80s-sounding pop song!

Over the past decade I've noticed it's become normal to put out teasers for "tentpole" films from almost a year to more than a year in advance of the actual release date.

EDIT: I neglected to mention there is one very suggestive image in the teaser. Brief, but very risque'.

In reading up on her history on the Web, she was in some ways to victim of some dreadfully bad press. To be sure, she and her family got to reap what her husband's ancestors had sown, but still.

Ok, watched the trailer and I was ... flummoxed and confusticated. Seriously, how many tons of crack, meth, and weed make someone think "Hey, let's play a New Order song for this movie trailer!"

At least the Sex Pistol's God Save the Queen would have some relevance to the topic. Or even a song by Queen. Or something by Cake. But New Order? That's really stretching it.

It was pretty different, but I think I almost liked it. It was kinda cool.

I agree the song was a hideous choice for the trailer. Like mph I _almost_ liked it, but I just couldn't. It wasn't different enough to be cool, it was just different enough to be stupid.

I've got some Tinactin that'll take care of that...

I liked the song and the trailer combined. It seems they're trying to market it that way, given the design of the trailer's surround. But yes, I thought they managed to pull it off.

I'm pretty sure this is a conscious choice, especially given the director. I wouldn't be surprised if they're making a deliberate allusion -- probably for ironic effect -- to '80s teen "coming of age" films.

Probably. Even people who don't know the details about Marie Antoinette's life tend to know something about the way she died.

In fact, presenting Marie Antoinette's life as a screwball '80s romantic comedy could conceivably satirize both genres, if done well.

Many parts of her later life wouldn't be very adaptable for screwball comedy...but the stuff from the seven year period before she and her husband began a family and she settled down? Yeah, I can see that.

I'm more concerned about Kirsten Dunst playing Marie than I am about the music they've got in the trailer.
