I think I heard the words "from dust you came and to dust you shall return" quite differently this year . . .

Rather than hearing those words as a threat- or promise- of dire things to come, it seemed more a promise of freedom.

Not in death -- but in life.

As in the realization that really, truly -- I'm not in control of the world around me. And that that really and truly is okay. Not in a sense of "excusing" me from caring for people and places around me as best I can, but knowing that that is really all I can do -- the best I can. And that is okay.

If that makes any sense, at all --

That feels rather freeing. *smile*

Any Ash Wednesday thoughts from other folks?

There are two things that we are called to do: be holy and save souls. Two ways we are instructed to do this are through prayer and penance. That is what the priest said at Mass, yesterday, and I feel like I'm learning, in particular, the penance aspect this season. A re-learning of how to be humble and how to rejoice in that.
