It was brilliant. Respectful of Isaac Hayes and their past together. They will truly miss him. But still very pointed in *who* is to blame in the whole mess.
Love the Revenge of the Sith parody at the end, too.

I was only upset about how badly Chef was treated. I know he is a fictional character and all, but its not his fault the guy doing his voice has been brainwashed.
The end was actually sort of moving. Telling us not to be mad at Isaac Hayes, but at Scientology for brain washing him.

The thing is, I don't think that *Chef* was treated badly. I think they genuinely cared for him and said so, at the end. They will miss him. His departure and, later, the accusations were things the children rejected.
All in all, I that it was a fitting good-bye to Isaac Hayes/chef while at the same time, hitting the "club" he belonged that made his departure necessary.

Yeah after that episode bashing Metallica and the rest for going after song downloaders, they would be pretty hypocritcal to complain.

I didn't see it, but I heard about it and it sounded funny. The article said that it appeared that all of Chef's lines were lifted from recordings of previous episodes. I wonder when they started work on this episode.
Also, this may be old news, but I just heard that Isaac Hayes had a stroke in January. I suppose that could have influenced his decision to leave.

Not only was it a fitting farewell to a beloved character. But it was also an awesome season premiere.

The episode was rather rushed (as in something done in an afternoon) and unfunny, but had a decent message to it (albeit, another slam on Scientology, which is why he left in the first place).

Unfunny? I thought it was hilarious. And as far as rushed, these guys have proven that they can come up with better scripts in an afternoon than most people can in weeks. Not to mention that the editing together of Chef's lines was meant to sound rushed, since most of the comedy hinged upon the audience realizing that they were splicing it together out of stuff from old episodes.
I loved how they started it off appearing to be a slam on Isaac Hayes (at which level they could totally have made it work) and brought it around to forgiving him and wishing him well, while blaming the whole problem on the "fruity little club that scrambled his brains." These guys are the masters of the tightrope walk between convincingly arguing a serious point and still making it goofy, irreverent and hysterical. They don't always get it right, but when they do they put everyone else to shame. And last night was, IMHO, another classic.

Actually, in their commentary on that episode they explicitly said that they didn't mind it. They said that, for their show, downloading has actually done way more good than harm. They also said that the big fans are going to buy their DVDs anyway, and the people who download the shows tend to be people who aren't into the show enough to buy the DVDs, and it's better for them to have those people watch the show for free than not at all. (disclaimer: paraphrased from memory)
As was mentioned, that doesn't mean it's okay with Comedy Central and isn't meant to imply that you'll be free and clear from a legal perspective downloading the shows. But at least we know that Matt and Trey are cool with it, which is nice.

I knew what direction the episode was going from the start. It wasn't in any way surprising to me, but I did find it kind of funny. It also seemed a fitting way to say goodbye.

I don't think it's very fair to presume a person's religion is just brainwashing. Or should we discuss whether or not Mormons are just brainwashed to believe the things they do too?
Frankly, I think South Park is really asking for it at this point.

Unless Mormon missionaries lie (or strectch the truth) to get people in the door I personally would never compare the two. But unlike some out there, I actually respect the Mormon religion.

Well, if you don't think Mormon beliefs are true, they do "stretch the truth" to get people in the door. For one thing, if God doesn't exist, claiming God exists would be stretching the truth. But I suspect to those who believe scientology, they aren't lying at all to get converts.
More importantly, I wasn't making a direct comparison more than pointing out Mormon believers could also be easily written off as brainwashed - as could members of virtually every religion. And as a matter of fact, I can guarantee you that many people out there DO believe Mormons are brainwashed by their church, and that otherwise they'd see the light and convert to what they consider a more mainstream Christian religion. This can get troublesome if it includes parents or family members of LDS converts who want to save their loved one from the grips of the Mormon church. Do you believe that this is a good approach to take when you consider someone beliefs to be crazy - presume it is all just brainwashing?

There was an episode about Mormonism that was roughly equivalent to the one about Scientology, wasn't there?

For me it would depend on how my loved one found the religion. If they went out and actually researched the history and belief structure themselves, great. If they are relying solely on what one, or a few people are telling them, then I would have some issues. Mormons seem pretty open and up front about what they believe in. Scientologists don't really want their new members learning about Xenu and the galactic federation.

Actually, while not buying for a second LDS theology, it shows that LDS teachings have lead to happier families (sort of.)

The Mormon episode didn't actually have the Mormons admitting that it was a scam. That's a pretty significant difference.

I had no interest in South Park when I was younger. But these latest seasons have been amazing -- Matt and Trey seem past the fart-poop-curse jokes, and into some fantastic commentary. I'm really lucky to have found the show while I can still raise its ratings.

The Mormon episode, btw, was very flattering of the LDS Church -- if skeptical of Mormon beliefs. I don't see how any Mormons who saw it could take offense to it.
