Would it be totally wrong for me to answer the question about what kinds of expectations I want to realize through my MBA or how it will enhance my background by telling them that I wasn't sure how to answer the question, but I figure they get hundreds of essays about how an MBA will make them better businesspeople and more responsible and further their careers in saran wrap manufacturing or something, so I thought about telling them how I feel that an MBA will help me conquer the world, rule with an iron fist, and force all people to wear burlap sacks for clothing...except that really, I'm only twenty-one, and my career doesn't have an actual direction yet, so at the very least, with an MBA I can further my education, increase the opportunities I have available to me, and maybe figure out more of a direction along the way?

I just think of application essays, especially the "in 400 words or less" ones, in terms of those interview questions that ask things like, "How many quarters would it take to build a stack as high as the Eiffel Tower?"

Well, that, and I have finals tomorrow and am slightly out of my mind. But I don't know if some of you remember, but I did write an undergrad application essay about how I thought all undergrad application essays sounded like travel brochures and ended it with "I like cheese" translated into many different languages.

I don't know. I just really don't want to write a bland, Mickey Mouse short essay, especially when I really don't have any specific expectations of my MBA beyond, like, learning stuff. And I really want to rant about ruling the world.

But...they might not appreciate that.

Meh. I submitted a poem about a bleeding girl as my essay for several schools. It was apparently enough to get me a $10,000/year academic scholarship to the University of Rochester, despite the fact that I scored a mediocre 1390 on my SATs and had a 3.3 GPA leaving highschool.

Then again, I got rejected by 11/13 schools I applied to. So really, who knows? It might strike a chord. The question really is...do you feel lucky, punk?

Well, the real point of the essay is that I'm not gonna lie, I have no real work experience and no idea what kind of career I want, I just kinda wanna learn more stuff, and I clearly like business because I'm graduating with a BBA in marketing (from the same university) and have a 3.8 major GPA.

I just really don't know what I ultimately want to do with my life, so I really have no idea how an MBA will apply to my career when I might end up with a career in, like, Elbonian underwater basketweaving, for all I know.

Why don't you tell them that, but then go into the qualities of business management that apply to everyday life, and emphasize that no matter what you go into, there are things that will help you day-to-day in dealing with people? (I may be affected by the Organizational Behavior class my husband is taking right now, but I've really realized that business is a lot like real life, and vice versa-- things that can help you in one can often help you in the other.)

You said it's at the same university you're doing undergrad at - this tells me that they already admitted you with a nonstandard essay once. If that's a fair representation of the school's attitude - that they generally don't mind a little creativity and lack of cheese in essays - then you should be clear, right? I would admit you. Or rather, I wouldn't not admit you on the basis of that essay. [Smile]
