We found a theater playing "A Prairie Home Companion" in another city. And went to see it yesterday. I was surprised that it was not more avalaible. But, I decided that probably no one was planning to go, unless they were already a fan. That's too bad. We enjoyed every minute, and laughed out loud many times. That's way unusual for me. The best part, however was after the movie, I was prepairing to drive home with a visit to the men's room. There were two older guys (Older means older than me)talking at the utilitys. One said that it was the funnyist movie he had seen in ages. The other said that he couldn't remember where he had seen the "MC guy before. He was sure it had been in another recent movie. He then said that he had shown such a good voice, that he could almost be a real radio announcer. The first guy agreed. I couldn't help myself. I asked if they really did not know that the movie was based on a real radio show that was on every Saturday. I gave them the station frequency and call sign and the time. They had never heard of the station, KUER. And, I could tell that they thought I was just "fooling" them. I explained that most of the characters played by "real" actors were characters from the real program, and that the rest were real people playing themselves. But, alas, they left unconvinced. In any case everyone should go see the show. Even, if you havn't discovered the real thing yet. It was great.

I was surprised when a friend of mine had never heard of the radio show as well. I haven't seen the movie yet, but no matter how good it is I just can't imagine seeing it w/o having some familiarity w/ the show!
(what's next? A Car Talk movie?)

I'm gonna see if my mom can watch the kids next week so we can go. I've been listening to the show since I was... well, 5 is the first I remember it. I went to the Greek Theater to see it live a couple of years ago. It was wonderful.

I thought the movie was hilarious, but very strange. The whole part with the angel just confused me and I felt that Tommmy Lee Jones' character wasn't really needed. But still, I laughed out loud throughout the movie.
I think the scene between GK and the angel really summed it up for me, when he's describing the joke. "Why is that funny?" "Because people laugh at it." It's so true. A lot of the jokes, I have no idea why I think they're so funny, but they really are. I love this show.

I thought it was a good movie. Kevin Kline's character especially had a lot of funny moments, and even though a lot of his parts struck me as, well, slapstick comedy really, I still loved it.
I was however put off a little bit by the unnecessary randomness that ran throughout the movie. I guess I feel like, where there were several subplots running through the movie, most of them never really went anywhere.
Don't get me wrong though, I still really liked the movie, and I'd recommend it.
I've never actually listened to GK on the radio, I've only ever listened to him on recordings. What station is he on, and when?

Having not gotten to see it yet, I don't know, but it may be that some of the subplots make more sense/are more sufficient unto themselves if you are familiar with the long-running characters on the show?

Tis possible. Usually I dislike movies that require a great deal of beforehand knowledge. I don't want to have to do homework to go see a movie (which is part if why, even though I thought it was good personally, I think Serenity left much to be desired). I'll have to wait and hear from someone who has seen the movie and listened to the show.
I hadn't considered that.

ooh, I saw a preview for that a few months ago and hadn't realized it's out now. I'll have to look up local theaters that might be playing it.
I saw Prairie Home live in MN when I was there visiting Macalester College, and it was AMAZING. I'd love to go again.

KQ: Sadly, not really. They are genuinely random stories. I mentioned the same thing, and Matt said that it is because it is a Robert Altman movie.
Robert Altman direction + Garrison Keiller's script(radio variety show) = enjoyable, plot-less movie
