It certainly does not seem to be a case of running Rove out of office. But calling it a case of Bush's, "friends" all abandoning him as his presidency draws ever nearer to closing does not make me feel much better.
Never been a big fan of Rove, but then again, I've never met the man. My best friend's father went to school with him and insists Rove was a warped, frustrated old man; yes he was an old man in school. Another common adjective he used to describe Rove was, "Ruthless."
I'm glad he is leaving, but I certainly hope Bush replaces him with somebody with a bit more of a moral compass.

Wow. I wonder if this has anything to do with the Atlantic Monthly cover story or if that story was the result of the same forces that moved him to leave.

Bush is already a lame duck, Rove leaving doesn't make it official or anything, it's already how things are.
The thing everyone should be looking for is who Rove will throw his weight behind next. There's a lot of Republican candidates out there who will be courting him.

I expect to see him on the university lecture circuit.

No reason why he can't do both. Tens of thousands of dollars a pop for speeches on the lecture circuit and offering advice via phone calls and emails, and then if his candidate is elected, he's back to a government salary. But I'd be surprised if this was his bow from the national political scene entirely. He's too valuable a player, and the RNC can still afford to keep him happy if it comes to a money issue, though I can't imagine it will.
