So, I'm reading a new Tokyopop OEL manga called Undertown. And I'm enjoying it, for the most part. It takes the tropes of a "kid lost in a strange land" fantasy and spins an exciting story with colorful characters.
But every few pages I'm jolted out of the story. Why? Because it's made incredibly obvious that the book was either originally developed as a video game pitch...or is going to -be- a video game pitch.
Seriously. Characters all but refer to their "health levels".
I find this is an increasing problem in our multimedia age. People rarely create a new property in hopes that it'll -just- be a good story. It also has to be a good video game, toyline, movie franchise, greeting card line, "songs inspired by" album....you get the picture.
I suppose I'd have to go all the way back to Walt Disney to pinpoint the source of this attitude, but lately it's been getting more and more blatant.
(Comics are not alone in this. I swear every Dan Brown novel reads like a spec script.)

I dunno, sounds like you're getting easily agitated by this, maybe your health level is pretty low. Build up that stamina!
Go find some white boxes with red plus signs on them. That should do the trick. Or some really big mushrooms.
