I've been searching around for some help to get the original version of Myst to run properly on my computer. Last night, I thought it was going to work after uninstalling Quick Time and reinstalling a really old version, fiddling with the compatibility mode and changing the color (to 256) and view (480xsomethingorother?) settings (forgive me for the lack of technical jargon...just not good with that), but despite the game finally starting up right, the very first time you try to open a door or pull a lever, a prompt comes up telling you the program experienced an error, stopped running and would close. I'm not sure why it does this or what possible component (the disc? the Quick Time install? something else?) is allowing this error to disrupt the game. Apparently, there is some way to get Myst for Windows 95 running on Vista, and these tactics are the ones that should work; however, they're just not cutting it. Oh, also, I tried uninstalling everything and reinstalling more than once, in case that makes a difference.
I've found a couple possible threads on forums that might help, but if anyone has any better suggestions or corrections to make to those threads (below), your help would be greatly appreciated!
This was a Valentine's Day gift (yes, I know it's technically this coming Saturday), so it would be really cool if the gift would work, you know?

You could also use a service like GameTap or Good Old Games. Actually, an annual subscription to GameTap would probably make a very nice gift.

Oh, sorry, that wasn't very clear. It was actually a gift I received, so finding a way to make it work would be a nice boost to the giver. Does that make sense?

I downloaded myst for a friend once, and whenever you turned it on the screen was flipped upside down. Sorry this doesn't help you at all, but I just remembered that.
I ended up just flipping the monitor upside down by the way, anything else would have probably ended badly.

Heh. I love the image of trying to do that with a laptop, if that happened to be problem.
Actually, now this whole thread is moot, though I appreciate the suggestions! I think he's going to find whatever version came out in 2000, one that should work with the tweaking I already know how to do. Thanks all!

This is overkill for just one game, and it sounds like you've found a solution anyhow, but when I had a bunch of old games I wanted to play, I picked up a 486 at a thrift store for $20, and it was my game computer. In addition to playing the old games that I liked, there was also the delicious irony of calling a 10-year-old computer (at the time, now closer to 20 years) my "game computer." I had to get rid of it when I was living in a very small space, but I kind of miss that old computer.

Yeah, it was definitely going that way. The little internal dilemma was that I've got Riven and the next one, but never finished Myst (long ago, I think I went away to college and it stayed back with my parents) and always wanted to. I'm not a gamer unless you want to count Freecell and Spider Solitaire.
