...why KQ has not been on lately. Our oldest daughter had a seizure last Thursday and her temperature spiked to 104. She went to the hospital, but was later released after given antibiotics, motrin, and tylenol. She had to go back to the hospital on Sunday because she said her tongue would not stay still.

So, KQ has been staying at the hospital overnight to be with her while they do various testing such as, EEG, MRI, etc...we are still awaiting the MRI. Hopefully, they will be returning home on Thursday, but we still do not know the cause or have a diagnosis yet.

I hope everything is ok, good luck.

Thanks everyone!

The MRI was clear. They still do not have a diagnosis yet, but she is improving. She is eating more and having less symptoms. She may be in there for another day or two for observation, but then possibly released after that.

Just a word of hope though. My cousin had frequent seizures when she was younger, anytime she would get ill. She's now 12 and hasn't had one in 4 years!

Good luck! *Hugs* for all of you!

KQ just called and said that they should be coming home today! They have one or two more blood tests to do, but the discharge papers were being prepared. Emma still has been having some small movements where her toes or fingers will curl, but the doctors feel that this should go away soon. If it does not, then she will have to go back in for more testing.

I just typed a whole long post and am about to cry because Hatrack wouldn't allow a link, I went back and it was gone.

I am too tired to retype it right now but main points:

-they don't know what it is. It progressed really fast, but got better really fast. It was not typical for anything they know of. Most of the movements were deteremined to be most likely choreiform. Definitely not seizure activity (per EEG done while she was moving. Seizure Thursday was almost definitely febrile but, well, they just can't be 100%.)
-Emma is very brave. Maggie and Bridget are very brave. I am not very brave.
-they are hoping with the hospital stress gone and some rest she will be completely better. Followup Monday as long as she's not worse over the weekend, Neuro followup will be scheduled after they get all the bloodwork back.
-Most likely outcome at this point is they go away completely and never come back, with a chance they will and a chance they will not ever figure out what caused it (weighted, honestly, at this point, toward never finding out.) Much less likely outcome is that they go away and at some point come back. Very unlikely is that they never go away, or take an extremely long time to go away.
-Kids are way resilient.

Like I said I am tired, and not up to rewriting the whole experience, but if you have questions ask and I'll answer.

Also I picked up what is most probably RSV (having been very careful about handwashing and that being the only airborne thing I was exposed to, when the baby sharing Emma's room coughed on me as I walked in and out of the door) so now I have to be very very careful not to transmit it to Maggie, I feel like crud, and when the coughing gets really bad, I have to wear a mask to protect her. Hopefully it will be done soon.

Also my family is great. All of them. My dad stopped by every day with fresh fruit, my mom watched the kids, my sister (who lives around the corner from the hospital and had the week off) brought books, played with Emma, gave me breaks and saved my life with a whole bunch of clothes to change into when I had been in the same ones for 4 days straight. And everyone else in my family, the list goes on. And thank you all for your concern, well wishes, and prayers too (we still need them if you've got any left...) I appreciate it lots.

ETA: If you're interested, thought I'd add in some of the possible diagnoses they kicked around (some of which have been ruled out already, some are still in the running):

-encephalitis/post encephalitis reaction
-rheumatic fever
-PANDAS
-various and sundry movement disorders
-brain injury during seizure

Like I said, most of those have been ruled out already. (A few are mostly ruled out but waiting on blood tests or further developments.)

Just thought you (especially the medical yous) might be interested in all the various things they kicked around (and the poor child had to be tested for...)

I am SO glad you and Emma are home! Hospital stays are horrid, and doubly so when you don't have any idea of what is wrong and how long they will be! I surely hope this goes away and you never have to worry about it again.

On a side note, I cannot BELIEVE the hospital put an RSV baby in a non-RSV room. That seems like extremely poor infection control. I'd be seriously ticked at them!

Good luck, you're still in my prayers!

Actually, Emma was a very good choice to put in the RSV baby's room. (To clarify, the baby was there when we got there. What they actually did was put a non-RSV older patient in an RSV baby's room.)

See, the cribs are far enough apart that as long as precautions are observed between patients the risk of one catching even an airborne illness from the other is extremely low. The only reason I got it is because I was in and out of the room a lot and the friendly little girl would smile at me, I'd stop to talk, and she'd cough on me. [Blushing] My fault.

Not to mention that Emma is almost 5. She's at extremely low risk if she does catch RSV, like an adult is-- she's old enough to just get a bad cold from it, like I did. Since the ward was COMPLETELY full-- they did not have an extra bed, some kids were having to wait hours in the ER or urgent care before they could come up while other patients finished being discharged-- they needed to use every space, and all the other patients admitted the same day as Emma were much younger than her, and therefore high risk. I thought it was a pretty good choice in a circumstance in which they had no option but to put the kid in with SOMEONE else. [Smile] And I'm big enough to deal with it.

In other news, Emma slept 14 1/2 hours last night and woke up functioning completely normally. COMPLETELY. She talked my ear off today. She did get a bit tired and took another 3 hour nap this afternoon but she's doing great, we even went to a birthday party (an adult one of course, no other kids there for me to get sick.)

I'm feeling better too and we're hopeful that that was it but I am being cautious with her, enforcing rest and watching her fluid intake and such just to make sure.

Woo Hoo - sounds like everything will be ok then!

That's interesting what you say about the RSV rooms. Down here they won't put anyone except two RSV patients together and all the RSV rooms have big red signs taped to the door. It made it look really scary, but I'll admit I've never done any serious research into it.

Well, it sounds like your house is full of happy, (mostly) healthy little girls again. Congrats!

It's looking most likely viral. Most likely post encephalitis. But that's a diagnosis of exclusion, since they didn't manage to get spinal fluid during the fever.
