I just saw the "Book of Mormon" movie, and boy was I surprised. I knew that Card was Mormon, but since I am not, I had no idea how much his books were based on the Book of Mormon . My fiance and I saw the movie on a whim, and were really surprised by the connection. Within the first 10 minutes, I realized the connection between Nafai in the book and Nafai on screen. As the movie progressed, we could literally predict each upcoming scene, as we had read them all already. It was a pretty amazing expereince.
Later we realized the connection of the Book of Mormon to the "Alvin the Make" series. For example, the tree with white fruit and promise land are seen again. I realize this connection to the tree of life, with the fruit being God's love. What a beautiful and wonderful way to pass on the message to others.
Has anyone else seen this connection?

The Homecoming saga was directly based on The Book of Mormon (as you noticed ). The Alvin Maker series is (very, very loosley) based on the life of the prophet Joseph Smith (the founder of the Mormon religion). So a decent amount of stuff in that book as origins in Mormonism, but as I'm sure you also noticed, there's not a whole lot of divine intervention in that series.
A lot of OSC's books have huge Mormon influnces in them, but very few are actually written about Mormons so its mostly just ideas that seep in (like the tree of life). There was a whole big fuss about "stealing" from The Book of Mormon in the Homecoming series that OSC responded too. I'll try and dig up a link for you.
I also noticed a lot of Mormon beliefs interwined within Xenocide and CotM. I've often wondered if any Catholics got mad at OSC for using a Catholic setting in those.

Wow, if we ever get a chance to try someone else's little memory ball (like in Worthing Saga) I will definitely try yours. That had to be such a trip. I mean trip in a colloquial "totally fun" way and not in any technical pharmacological sense.

I have a Catholic friend that had read Ender's Game, and I purposely got him to read Speaker for the Dead just so that I could get a Catholic response to it. He didn't have any problems with it.

The Book of Mormon begins with Nephi, not Nafai, and there are a hundred differences between the two. . . but Card's Homecoming series is nonetheless a nice read.
Every religion has its culture, and idosyncracies, things that make "clear" sense only to others of that religion, such as terminology. As one example, what some religions refer to as "testifying", Latter Day Saints call "bearing testimony".
By the way, many of us recognize that "Mormon" is a nickname - we do not worship Mormon, we worship God, and prefer to not be called "Mormons".
I don't think religion much matters once a writer has used some artistic license, anyway. It's not like anything he says is a manual for anyone's religion - Catholic, LDS, or any other. His characters each hold different beliefs and that is all that is being reflected.
