This is my first post and I am glad I found this place. I enjoy Mr. Card's work tremendously and am currently working toward becoming a published author in the genre, myself. Mr. Card's "How to..." book is a tremendous resource, works with you without being preachy and doesn't pound you over the head with common sense issure an aspiring writer should already know.
The thing I am most grateful for though is the knowledge that contrary to my preconcieved notions, I would not be a pariah to the literary community, and more specifically the genre, for my social and political views. In truth, the intersection of such views and narrative story telling need not be an issue, as we all read work produced by authors that represent a wide range of social and political views. For me, the idea was foisted upon me that I was unfit to create because of how I felt away from my writing. As stringently as I rejected such assertions, doubt still crept in and pry my hopes from reality. Reading some of Mr. Card's essays has bolstered my resolve and along with other successful authors in the field, like Dr. Ben Bova, has made me come to understand more completely that though groups of people may, and in fact disagree on innumerable issues, Good writing and skillful story telling will meet with success.

From your other post, it appears that you haven't read "Character and Viewpoint" by OSC. If you liked his other how-to book, you should love this one.

Yeah, I had forgotten he wrote more than one how to book. My mistake, sorry for any confusion. I will have to check that out, but I have a backlog of fiction to read right now. I try and keep a balance between "research" and err well "other research" I read other work with part of my mind critiquing it and making notes on things I like and dislike. But for the type of stuff I am working on, I also read non fiction reserach(recently, Sun Tzu's Art of War, and "Warfare in the Classical World")

As an aspiring writer, it might interest you to check out a fellow Hatracker's writing career thread. It's interesting to follow Scott R's progess as he works to get published.
