My family raised hogs in central Iowa back when the Mormon's were in Navoo (the site of the Crystal City) and in the winter they would slaughter hogs and haul them to the Mississippi and cross on the ice to sell them there. The road that was used eventually was used by fleeing Mormon's. This is not the point however, save only that it is interesting and it implies thicker ice then we see now at any time on the river.

The point is that while the fog on the Mississippi is a barrier crossing it might become all important.

Alvin could tunnel under it with little effort! Think of it! Tunnel built by evaporating the bedrock into gas and hardening the walls into glass! A perfect escape hatch to the safety of the Red Side.

Of course if it fell into the wrong hands it could be the gateway into the Red Land that opens them to the white man.

Either way crossing the river just as it was in our history will be critical to the finish of the story.
