After reading this article, I couldn't help but think Dickie Smothers is going to show up here in a couple of weeks, having discovered Ornery, denouncing Card for having socially conservative ideas.
I just can't get over the inability of people to reconcile their emotional connection with Card's fiction, the compassion they feel from him, with his differing views on social issues.
The real issue, I think, is that people can't grasp the concept that people who think differently than them may actually be motivated by something other than hate.

I don't get it. Why is it relevant to the article that Dickie Smothers is reading OSC? Note: I have never heard of the "Smothers Brothers" before. Is there something I'm missing?

The Smothers Brothers are a very funny couple of guys who had a variety show in the sixties that was controversial because of their constant criticism of the government at the time.
It was replaced with Hee-Haw.
And their ideas were pretty liberal. So for him to be talking up a conservative, and poo-pooing the Dixie Chicks for talking about the President is pretty interesting.
