Try doing some research into Islam. Here are some quick and dirty (and consequently not entirely accurate) definitions:
Imam: religious leader Hajj: the holiest shrine in all of Islam, located in Mecca; also the name of the pilgrimage thereto. Shariya: a form of fundamentalist Islamic law

Imam is a teacher as well as a leader - they gather disciples and students rather than "members."
And while there are fundamentalist interpretations of shari'ah, the shari'ah itself is common to all Islam. Sunni and Shi'ite Muslims differ on the finer points of shari'ah, but all Muslims agree that shari'ah, in one form or another, is the basis of a holy life.
And Hajj in Kismet isn't just a beggar - he's the guy who gets to sing "The Olive Tree" and "Fate" and "Gesticulate." If I weren't so fat that I could never be convincing in the part, I'd put on a production of Kismet just so I could play the lead.
