I have felt certain similarity among Nefi's trip and his family towards the promised land and Nafai's trip and the others towards the Earth. Mr. Card, is possible that you have taken it as a reference?

The Homecoming series was sold to TOR as "a science fictional retelling of the story of the Book of Mormon," and the Book of Mormon was open in front of me as my plot outline.
However, the book never says so explicitly because people would then assume that it was religious or that it was trying to propagandize for Mormonism. Which it most definitely is not. It's the STORY I was going for, not the doctrine.
