While I was growing up, I remember a brief flirtation with geneology. Unfortunately my family had very little in the way of records so I wasn't able to get very far and being young, most of my focus was on "am I related to anybody famous?"

About the closest I came was when my mother told me that going back a ways we had a branch of the family that was Mormon. She went on to tell me that my great-great-great-grandfather was one of the scouts for Brigham Young and the first to find the site that became Salt Lake City. Furthermore, his son (my great-great-grandfather) was the first child born there.

So when I discovered the play by Mr. Card called "Barefoot to Zion" I had a big ole smile. Just the idea that one of my family, however distant, may have been in an Orson Scott Card work just made my day.

Now I just have to try to track down a copy of the script to find out if either of my ancestors were in the play. Well, that and find out if my mother still knows the names of those two ancestors.

Alas, I didn't write about the first trek to SLC in "Barefoot," but one of the many later expeditions. - and only at the end of the play. So I missed your ancestor.

So write another book about the missing ancestors! [Smile]

(I'm probably one of the most annoying people on this forum from OSC's view... Either of my identities.)

Well... sorry to hear it wasn't the case. It definitely would have been very cool.

Question: I haven't read Songmaster, but I know heard a character there is called Onn - like my cousin. I know OSC found Onn's name very surprising when he first signed Onn's books, and that Songmaster was published much after that book signing. Could there be a connection? Is that where OSC took the name?

I didn't know OSC did booksignings (more than) 25 years ago when Songmaster was written.

It was very cool to see OSC utilize one of my relatives, Jim Bowie (Great Great Great Great Great Great uncle) I'd be very interested to hear about what research OSC did to be able to discern a character out of what has now become more myth then reality. In all my research I get conflicting reports and very little about Jim Bowie as a person and historical figure and more legends about what he "did" and how legendary he is. It makes painting a family picture quite difficult. The Battle of the Alamo happened less then 200 years ago and facts are almost impossible to find. I'd be very interested to learn if Jim was based off more of the "Legendary Jim" or who he really was. It was a very cool experience seeing not only my family name mentioned in the book but for Jim Bowie to actually be a character in the novel. It was great to finally see him as a person instead of a fable, even though that makes him less of a person to brag about. [Smile]
