I was wondering if you might give more detail on this claim from the latest Uncle Orson column:

"From The Halloween Tree on, Bradbury’s work has lost its edge. Only flashes of the early intensity and brilliant workmanship survive."

Especially w/ regard to prose rather than poetry.

From the column in question:

quote:
But even when the "genius" is a genial fellow who means no harm to any living soul, when he is treated worshipfully he is bound to get a feeling of entitlement, a certainty that whatever he does will be better and more important than what other people do.

Most people have constant reminders that they are not, in fact, better or more important than other people, and I think this is a good thing.

Those who find themselves surrounded by people who treat them worshipfully need to run away from those people and seek out the company of the unimpressed.

Now we know why Uncle Orson has this forum.

You got it. And you folks do your job very, very well. Let a fanboy raise his worshipful head, and you slap him down pretty quick. Thanks. I needed that.

Suspect? Why? He complained about Thunderbird's file format and I found a fix for it. It's not free, but it was the first thing I found. Someone in this thread found a free solution.

<raising head to see if OSC might answer the original inquiry...>

He complained about Thunderbird in the same column in which he talked about Bradbury. I guess if you didn't read the column it *would* seem like a bizzare addendum, but it wasn't [Razz]

I've never read Bradbury. He was in town here the other day for something though. Speaking, signing autographs and such.

I've always wanted to read Something Wicked this Way Comes. I hear it puts the film to shame.

The writer's and artists that I've personally met generally tend to be a hubristic lot that are easily impressed with themselves. There are certainly exceptions, but they prove the rule.

Insofar as the book "Something Wicked This Way Comes" is better than the movie... well, it's just really hard to pack all the stuff from a novel into a movie, as they're very different mediums. It's hard to put some scenes into pictures. Like how Will Halloway's dad kills the Dust Witch, a scene from the book that's stuck with me that would be nigh-impossible to commit to film without tacky voice-overs.

The movie was pretty good, I remember it fondly, but the book has greater breadth and depth.

The phone book puts the movie "Something Wicked" to shame. Dreadful movie. But the book is wonderful.
