In the Speaker series, the hive queen tells Ender that they 'created' Jane and put her into the mind game, where she eventually got in touch with him and became self-aware. I interpreted this as that the...(oh I forget that word- aiua is it?) was always self-aware, since it was the actual BEING of the creature.

However, in the Shadow series Bean and the IF essentialy create the mind-game to be semi self-aware to deal with fiding the kids and the handling of Ender's pension. I got the impression that the program, over time, became more and more 'self-aware' (as if there are different levels of knowing you are you).

Am I missing something? Was the creation of the added self-awareness to the program by Bean make the 'aiua', put in place by Formics, more aware of its being? Does that negate the purpose of the 'aiua' in general- that they are not aware of being?

Maybe a simlar analogy would be hardware vs. software. Humans created the hardware that gave birth to Jane (along with the potential design for her "brain"), and the Hive Queen and Ender were able to give her her soul.

I always thought it was an interesting point that Bean's father was a software designer for the International Fleet. Maybe it is outright stated that he designed the game, and I am obtusely thinking this is a connection I made.

Or you could look at it this way: Jane is made up of a body, a mind, and a soul. Her body is made up of the computers connected via ansible. Her mind was created by the I.F., first as the fantasy-game, and then upgraded into the investment program. The Hive Queens gave her a soul (an aiua) when they attempted to create a bridge between themselves and Ender. The merger of all three parts is Jane.

ok, I get it. The soul isn't actually self aware, it's just in control of its 'self'.

That reminds me of one thing- during the second invasion, when Mazer killed the Queen, all of the fleet became helpless. But why? She wasnt the only queen, was she? Cause if she were, there would be no more Buggers. Or perhaps Buggers are controled only by their Mother? But then, there would be more than one Bugger-mind, and Queen of the Hive would say "we" in plural, just like the father trees.

Here is how I see it:

The queen couldn't fully understand / tame Ender's mind. they were too different.
the Queen needed some hybrid mind that thought 50% like a human and 50% like a Hive Queen.
The queen creates Jane as that link.
The queen still can't tame Ender even with Jane.
The queen forgets about Jane as she forgets about all things that no longer serve a purpose to her.
Jane evolves further on her own.

The way I remember it was that the Second Invasion was actually a colonization attempt by the buggers, and only had one queen. So when Mazer killed it, the soldiers all died.

I agree with EI, and I also thought that each Queen controlled thier own little section, but they still communicated and acted as one. I remember reading in one of the Speaker books that if a bugger drone smells another queen, it goes berserk, or something along the lines fo that.
