this occured to me while replying to the "is the hive queen altruistic?" thread:
i remember reading in speaker for the dead that ender and jane met on rov while he was speaking for the dead. but in 'investment counselor' he had already written the hive queen and hegemon but had never actually spoken anyone's death.
(also, i should mention that it's suggested that it was valentine's idea that ender use a name other than his own in 'investment counselor' where as in 'ender's game' he presented 'the hive queen' already signed 'speaker for the dead' to valentine.)
at the end of 'investment counselor' ender lists himself as "itinerant speaker for the dead." sorelledolce was supposedly where he witnessed his first speaking AND discovered jane, according to the short story.
i also remember hegemon peter mentioning the shakespeare colony. is this the same colony that ender governed?
is there something i'm missing?

As far as I can tell, 'Shakespeare' is the name of the settlement that Ender governed, while the planet itself is called 'Rov'.
As for the other things, I believe that SftD and IC do indeed contain some contradictions regarding Ender's early days as a speaker and his meeting Jane. These things happen in fiction. In fact, it even happens in non-fiction, as I'm sure any student of history will tell you.

Yeah, these discrepancies have been pointed out before--it's like the number of children Val has, sort of a fluid situation. However, the scenario usually accepted (according to OSC) is the one introduced in the most recent book, so in this case, the Investment Counselor version.
As for the Shakespeare colony thing, I always thought that when the colony became one of the Hundred Worlds, the name of the planet became Rov. But neo-dragon's comment is just as likely.

Time to create a full list of discrepancies, I guess. Not here, though. I hate the discrepancies I found recently upon listening to EG and Eshadow in rapid succession. They're all meaningless and all related to the fact that I don't memorize my own storylines. They're also easy to fix. So why not create a "consistent version" that resolves the contradictions?
It might be many years before it was eventually published, but ...
When we're ready to start, we'll create a separate forum, with a thread for each book within a series. There will be different rules, too. Contradictions must be listed with PAGE NUMBERS or EXACT letter-for-letter quotations of marker passages so that we can find them.
But for now ... we'll just remember that authors are human, and none of these things really happened because I made them all up ... <grin>

wait... these things didnt happen? pishaw, and santa clause killed the easter bunny.
i respect any discrepancies made. i find myself with them at every other page when i write. i'm interested in reading ender's shadow again now that you mention other discrepancies, though. i havent paid nearly as much attention to the shadow series. although, a road trip to florida and some time on the beach might be a perfect time to do so. i think i'll start wednesday when we leave.

With so many dedicated fans pitching in I bet we could weed out all the inconsistencies in no time. Then, all the books could be re-released with the corrections, new cover art, and new introductions by OSC; just in time for the 25th anniversary of "Ender's Game" (the novel) in 2010!

heck if yall are going to do that then i have to slow read through each novel again with a pen and paper beside me. give me enough time and i am SURE i can come up with a few inconsistencies for ya. im just good like that hee hee

Just what every author wants: a bunch of dedicated fans going through his books for the sole purpose of finding mistakes! OSC must be wishing he never said anything about revising them. lol
Then again, it is free editing...
