Recently someone posted a link to Audible.com indicating that 'Enders Game' was the number one favorite downloadable audio book.

http://www.hatrack.com/cgi-bin/ubbmain/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=004765;p=0&r=nfx

I went to the site, but couldn't find that list of Top 50 Audio Books anywhere, but I did find many sample readings from many of Orson Scott Card's books. I must comment that I think they are very well read, more like radio plays with multiple actors rather than one person reading in different voices.

I noticed 'Maps in the Mirror' and selected the audio sample. I recently just bought a version of that book that is suppose to be a combination of three previous 'Maps in the Mirror' books.

So, the audio sample at the link below was about a story in which Elephants are wandering through the streets of Poland. Apparently some apocalyptic disease killed nearly the whole population and has stopped only humans from reproducing, and for some reason, elephants have wandered up from Africa to wander the plains of Europe.

http://www.audible.com/adbl/site/products/ProductDetail.jsp?productID=BK_DOVE_001275&BV_UseBVCookie=Yes

To listen to the audio sample, go to the above link and click on the little green bar just below the book cover graphic.

So, to the point...

Does anyone know the name of this story???

Thanks.

Thanks, oddly enough, that particular story doesn't seem to be in my version. My version implies that it is a combination of 5 previous books. It contains -

"In this enourmous volume are 46 stories, plus 10 long intensive personal essays, unique to this volume."

It is 675 pages of very tiny print creating roughly 50 lines per page. I though I have the comprehensive volume, now I discover there are more published stories out there. I'm bummed.

- MAPS IN A MIRROR ((c)1990) -

Book 1 - THE HANGED MAN - Tales for Dread
11 stories
Book 2 -FLUX - Tales of Human Futures
7 stories
Book 3 - MAPS IN A MIRROR - Fables and Fantasies
10 stories
Book 4 - CRUEL MIRACLES - Tales of Death, Hope, and Holiness
6 stories
Book 5 - LOST SONGS - The Hidden Stories
12 stories

How sure are you of the name?

Sorry -- I didn't read your post carefully enough. The story isn't in Maps. It's only an audio book. But I'm pretty sure that's the name.

I bought MAPS on audible, and that is the first story in it. I'm really excited about it, but haven't listened to it yet, because I found that just the introduction made me rather emotional, though I don't know why. I guess because I was jealous. I've always wanted to go "back" to Poland and never had the chance.

I searched the title 'Elephants of Posnan' on Google and it looks like this story is not from 'Maps in a Mirror' but from a audio-only book called 'Elephants of Posnan and Other Stories' by Orson Scott Card. [12 story collection]

http://www.amazon.com/Elephants-Posnan-Other-Stories/dp/1574534580

It sounded like a really interesting story. I deeply regret that it is not in my copy of 'Maps in a Mirror'.

No, I take that back, I just looked a little more and found this on SFFAudio -

Maps In A Mirror: The Short Fiction Of Orson Scott Card ((c)1999) [6 hours/8 stories]
http://www.sffaudio.com/2006/11/review-of-maps-in-mirror-short-fiction.html

This is newer than the printed version I have.

I'd love to hear or read that story, but the Audio book are about $30 to $40, and that's too steep for my budget; especially when I have nearly every other story.

It's a good story, if you ever get to experience it.

I was able to check out the audi book from my local library. Excellent story. I loved the other ones on that tape as well, but I don't remember the names. Freeway Games was on it though.

I'm pretty sure that's the only place you can experience "Feed the Baby of Love" as well.

Funny, i just don't remember Feed the baby of Love. I do remember it including Fat Farm, Unaccompanied Sonata, Freeway Games, and of course the short story original Ender's Game.

I'm pretty sure the only reason I checked it out was to listen to "Feed the Baby of Love", though I also listened to the other stories. Except for "Ender's Game". The dude doing the child voices was just too shrill.

No, "Feed the Baby of Love" was in The Bradbury Chronicles.
