And the only thing I had saved on my slave were my Wolf's Rain avis and our shop partner's pr0n collection. [Wall Bash]

Why oh why did I not put all my stuff on the backup drive? All my links, all my mp3's, all my text files, all my game screenshots, all my amusing pictures I leeched off the internet... gone. [Cry]

I can't even slave it to try a recovery, both computers refuse to boot up with it connected in any way shape or form. And it's almost brand spanking new, we just bought it 6 months ago. Its stil under warranty and they'll replace it, but they won't recover my data. [Mad]

I am going to buy 100 gig's worth of CD-RW's and back up everything in triplicate henceforth. I have learned my lesson O data gods, please let me have my mp3's back?

Have you taken it to a local computer shop? Sometimes, they can hook it up to their own computers using their own form of magic and retrieve your data. I had that done once. Only cost me something like $80 CDN, so about $50 US. It's worth a try.

I'd be interested in seeing this. Do they slap the drive on the forehead and cast out the demons?

Y'know, I've seen that. But my personal favorite? When they burn it at the stake and then, the next day, they resurrect it. Cool, hey? [Evil]

When you mean recovery, are you talking about Window's Recovery or an actual disk surface scan data recovery?

Update-
Its not the hard drive. Or rather, its not JUST the hard drive. After installing a new hard drive I am getting repeated blue screens of death, the same blue screen I got before the last one croaked. Now I'm very reluctant to turn on that computer for fear of the new hard drive dying.

Does anyone know what could be causing this? the blue screen message is KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR and my limited technical knowledge isn't up to task.

I'll probably keep the old hard drive around in case we ever scrape up the extra cash to attempt professional data recovery, but right now it's a big paperweight.

It may be your motherboard, Misha. How long have you had the computer? It might still be under warranty, too. Or, it could be that there is a happy little demon snugly tucked into your power supply, cackling with glee as it corrupts your pure hard drives. In fact, I'm pretty sure thats what it is. I'd call a priest.

PS: here is some info from MS.com specific to that error message. It's mostly mumbo jumbo, but once you get into the meat of it it's not so bad.

I wasn't even talking about professional data recovery. A lot of local computer geeks can recover data from a hard drive when ordinary non-geeks can't. And they're a lot cheaper than those professional data recovery places. That's why I'd go to a local computer shop, preferably one that you've heard really good things about, and see what they can do. You might be seriously surprised by what they're able to recover.

And how many times you'll end up saying, "I never downloaded that! I SWEAR!"

Heh, I always blamed that stuff on their teenage sons [Smile]

But seriously, if it's booting at all (getting to a blue screen is probably enough) a competent (Sometimes incompetent even) computer technician can save everything on the drive.

The original "dead" hard drive doesn't even get past the point where you can go into the bios. The computer refuses to boot with it connected. The new hard drive I just installed is the one getting the blue screen of death. I've removed it from the box in case the motherboard has gone bad and is taking hard drives with it. In any case, I've decided I need a new motherboard and processor (its good to find excuses to ugrade [Big Grin] ).

That right there is enough to make me wary of data recovery. <coughyaoicough> [Evil]

But Misha, you're talking about on your dead computer that's already having problems. On a fully functional computer, it's a whole other ballgame.

So I'm gonna say it again:

Don't give up on that hard drive yet. It's possible still that the data can be recovered. If it were me, I'd so be giving it a try. It ain't over yet.
