I should really watch out with my checkbook. Amazon is evil, and I should never go back.....even tho I know I will [Embarrassed] . I innocently bought a few books (to be sent to the ship while I am out to sea). That lead me into another search. That was the mother load. Albiet it was cheap....er [Angst] . I found a Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras [Big Grin] . I drooled on the 57% off. My current "came w/ the camera" lens sux [Mad] . So instead of paying $1350.00 I am paying $579.94. It has a 20.00 mail in rebate.

I gotta try it out the next time I go backpacking. Although maybe I should worry about finding the flash memory card for it first.

I have some excellent pix from older cameras that I had on previous trips in the 90's. I have moved into the digital cameras, but have also found that the lenses they come with are so horrible that I wouldn't dream of using it at any time.

Is $579 the average cost of a digital camera lens?

Or is that one of the better ones?

The one that I really want (because it would work great at the racetrack too) costs over $4,000.00. And I'm like [Eek!] .

I used to. But they were removed some time ago. The ones I have on film but not on disc have yet to be scanned in. My scanner is kaput right now so that isn't happening anytime real soon. I'll see what I can do with putting a sampling up. These won't be that great, but...

I'm sure they'll be just wonderful.

Oh, I don't know if you're interested but theres this site where you can post your photos and get them rated, etc. I use it often when I'm making images in Photoshop:

What has kept me from buying a semi-pro digital SLR so far has been the fact that, once I owned one, I would be almost incapable of resisting the urge to spend another three or four thousand dollars on lenses. I know this about myself, so I do not give myself the opportunity. [Smile]

My weakness isn't cameras, it's anime. To be more specific, anime that hasn't been distributed in the US--or indeed Japan--for close to ten years.

And I agree, Stan. Amazon and Half.com are the devil.

But on the upside, I've got a growing VHS collection.

Problem is is that I have owned somewhere around 10 cameras. One was an old Kodak that you can't even buy the film for anymore. It had the flash bulb in it that you had to replace after every shot you used the flash. One was one of the cheap children's camera (fitting, since I was 8 when I got it). I hava an older Sony digital that uses floppy discs (lost the battery charger). I had a newer Sony that also made up to 90 minute MPEGS, but that got stolen in Chile along with another camera. So I ended up buying a Canon Sure Shot Classic 120 while I was there. When I got to San Diego, I went to the NEX and bought a Canon digital Rebel. It isn't so much the professional one (The professional version was 300 dollars more), but it's a 7 some mega pixel camera.

It'll help get those mountain sunsets a little better.

Y'know, Stan, now you're obligated to give us some good mountain sunset pictures. [Wink]

Edit to add: Wow, those look very good. Much better than I can do.

I'll try. [Smile] However, it might be awhile now. Ship's schedule isn't looking good at all. I'll see if I can pull anything off next year.
