Well, it is finally official and all that. I'm moving to Phoenix on Sunday (hopefully BEFORE the super bowl), and I'll start work the following day.
Now, since is the first time I've had to deal with setting up the various elective (to some) utilities, I'll ask y'all for help and/or advice. I will be getting cable, local telephone access, and cable / DSL internet access. My question to you all (particularly you Phoenixites and SoCalers) is whom do you use for these services, and do you have any recommendations? Cost benefits will outweigh just about anything else really, so I'll be avoiding bells, whistles, and frills on all three services.
So has anyone done this recently, or simply in the know? (I've looked at Cox and Qwest a bit, but wasn't all that impressed by their offerings).

First off, I've lived in Phoenix for the last 5 years and Welcome!!!
For phone and internet, Cox is the best deal. Especially if you are planning on high-speed and defenitely want both phone and high speed internet. They are far and away the best internet company in the valley (for bandwidth) that I know of. Plus if you bundle at least 2 of Cox's services together, you get a discount. In fact, if you don't already have a cable modem, I have one that works and would be willing to sell it to you for cheap.
Cox phone service (when bundled) is cheaper than qwest for the basic service. Plus Voicemail is I think $7 a month on qwest and only $5 a month on Cox. The main reason I have Cox phone service is that they charge something like a $10 activation fee and qwest charges $50. I was a qwest customer when I moved from apartment to house and when I called about changing, they wanted to recharge me the $50, even after I told them I would go to a different company if they would not negotiate that fee. I have never had problems with Cox phone or interent (no longer an interent customer tho, I am back to dialup)
For television, Dishnetwork is my choice and recommendation. You get pretty much the same channels for less money. I recommend the top 100 plan and local channels. You get almost every local channel available.

If I had it all to do over again, I would get a cell phone and not have a house phone.
I like cable modem.
For your utilities, make sure you take proof of having had utilities before. Most companies will wave the HUGE deposit if you can prove you aren't a first time customer.

I would tend to agree about the cell phone, Bob. However, it is nice to use a land line for a lot of local calls. I would definitely recommend making sure you local phone line does not have long distance on it. You end up paying access fees that you could avoid with a decent calling card from somewhere like Costco (2 1/2 cents per minute) and a cell phone for long distance. The phone company will push you to add one but it is not required.
