Since I haven't yet, why not? I need to go look up the rules 'n stuff (I'm not sure what it entails....)

quote: The object of Mafia is to figure out who the members of the Mafia are and kill them via lynching. It is unknown how many Mafia members there are. Once a day, the Mafia may kill one of the players. At the end of the day, the players vote to decide who to lynch.
Since the mafia all know who they are, they have advantage over the townspeople. However, the townspeople are more numerous, and can win, if they are careful, by choosing correctly when they lynch.
As the Mafia has all the advantage, to make it more fair, the townspeople have two members to help them. The Sheriff, who can ask the moderator whether a particular player is a member of the mafia, and the Doctor, who can select to "save" a particular player. Both of these special roles may act once per day. If the Doctor chooses the same person the Mafia chooses, that player is not killed.
To complicate the game further and make the stategic possibilities more interesting, two more roles are added. The Godfather, who leads the Mafia. If the Sheriff asks for the real identity of the player playing the Godfather, the Moderator will reveal that player as a Townsperson. Also added is the Serial Killer, who is out for himself. He gets to kill any player he likes, mafia or townsperson. The only way for the Serial Killer to win is to kill *everyone* else. The Moderator will not reveal the Serial Killer to the Sheriff either.
Did that make it clearer? --jeniwren
Was gonna link it, then decided to quote it instead. Sounds like fun!

Once a day the player who is the Sheriff will contact me and ask if a particular player is Mafia. If they are, I answer Yes, then the Sheriff gets to use all his/her persuasive power to convince everyone to lynch that person.
The sole exception is the Godfather. If the Sheriff asks if the player playing the Godfather is Mafia, I will answer No. This keeps the Sheriff on his toes and casts some doubt on any No answers.

Because you don't know who the sheriff is..what if it's a mafia member, lying to get an innocent person lynched?

m2, I get to pick who plays what. Though I'll let out a little secret -- it's almost always by random draw of the hat. I don't know how other mods choose the roles, but that's how I usually do it.
The sheriff and doctor are best off keeping their identities secret, since they are natural targets for the Mafia. Without them, the townies are at a serious disadvantage.
All players: How do you feel about the Serial Killer? I'm willing to eliminate that role in this game, if you guys would prefer.

Yep. Though the mafia kill can be blocked by the doctor. And the lynch can fail to happen if we have a tie (as mod, I reserve the right to call which way a tie falls -- both dead, neither dead).

I understand that. I was talking about on a good day. I would also guess that once the mafia or the mob has killed the serial killer a max of two people per day would die.
Do you send out the e-mails for all the people playing? Or is it all done here on the site? I do not chat or AIM. I can supply a hotmail address that I can check from home and work.

I think a serial killer is a bad idea in a game without clues, especially if the game is already relatively small.

Alright....Count me in on this one. I have about 3 weeks until school starts, and I plan to waste them as much as can!

I just sent my computer off to dell, which means i won't have it for another week or so, and I'm NOT spending more time on computer lab computers than I have to.

Tom, I'm not dead set against clues, they're just so blinkin' hard to write in there. I *really* liked the keywords, but it gave the townies far too great an advantage. Do you have suggestions to make clues practical, yet evenhanded?

Nope. I'm bad at clues, myself. And besides, I think a clue-free game gets closer to the point of Mafia, anyway.
However, as much as I like the serial killer, I think the potential killing of three townies a turn introduces an element of luck into the game that seriously benefits the mafia. Clues help to counteract this, which is why I don't mind the serial killer in a clue-based game.
Me, I'd do the following rules:
1) No clues. 2) No serial killer. 3) When someone is killed, his or her role or mafia membership is announced immediately following his or her death. 4) All players must post at least once a day. Townies who do not post once a day will die of natural causes; mafia members who do not post once a day will be exposed to the sheriff.

I agree with Tom's rules...... I think they make a lot of sense....I'm not sure I entirely like the idea of a serial killer.

okeydoke. Works for me, though I won't give up identities unless it furthers the game and keeps it interesting.
So:
1. No clues. 2. No Serial Killer. 3. All players must post once a day. Players who do not post in the Mafia threads once a day will get one warning, then die of natural causes.
I won't tip off the Sheriff, because while it sounds like a splendid idea, it gives him too much leverage to verify his identity to the townies.
Starts Monday, if we get enough players. I want at least 18.

If you want to dig through the month-old posts you can find our Bonduville Mafia Game and see how we played it. I'm assuming we're ex-nay on the eeword-kays? They worked out relatively well, but I agreed that it gave the townies too much power. Of course, I wasn't really helping things...
Oh, by the way, I'm tentatively in. Depends on when we start.

If it's this Monday, then sorry, I won't make it. I'll be trekking to Utah for three days and moving in for the rest of the week.

Brettley, you are more than welcome to play whoever you want. I just don't require roles for the game to be played. It takes too much of my time to keep everyone straight (as opposed to totally disorganized, not as opposed to gay), and it turns off a number of potential players, leaving us with a very small game.
I'm thrilled you'll be playing! I think we've done Bonduville to death (literally), so I'm still deciding where to set this game.
