Dear Diary,

Well, the end of this trip is nearing, just a few days left before I must return home. It has been most interesting, I must say. For such a pleasant little town, it has an awfully busy undertaker. From the size of the cemetery, you would never know it. I went walking through the little church graveyard yesterday evening with Andrew, one of the smith’s sons and brother to the unfortunate Jenny Hansen. You know, one of my favorite things in all the world is to read old gravestones. But to walk among such a great number of newly turned graves gave me a bit of a chill.

Andrew told me what happened to poor Jenny. She was walking home alone from delivering soup to an impoverished family out in the woods beyond the edge of Hatrack River proper. She stepped out into the lane that runs from here to Orneryville, and was run down by those mysterious black riders. They did not kill her, then, though. With a broken leg and many broken ribs, she dragged herself most pitifully the remaining mile and a half to the house of the doctor, in vain hopes that her life may be saved. Sadly, the doctor was out, delivering Mrs. Feilding’s sixth baby (one would wonder that the woman needed a doctor after so much practice at birthing), and so dear Jenny drowned in her own blood.

This morning as I was eating the Cook’s most excellent oatmeal, yet another report of violence was brought by the errand boy. I really think I shall stop eating in the dining room entirely, and avoid the solarium for that matter, as it appears that these two rooms bring nothing but news of untimely demise. The dratted boy came in to say that there was a ruckus in the Town Square and everyone should come see. Of course, we all did, which left half the bowl of oatmeal to grow cold.

When we arrived at the Town Square, Mrs. Rivka stood stock still on the green lawn in a beautifully tailored blue virgin wool suit. I could not but envy the elegance she portrayed, though the bullwhip in her hand was most incongruous with the overall picture of her beauty. Opposite her, I gasped as I saw Jay Hovoid, my old school chum, dressed all in black (not his color, if I may say), and if you can believe it, dear Diary, actually snarling. I didn’t know that men could make that sound, but indeed, he did.

“You won’t take me with that, madam. You can prove nothing of my wrong doing!” Jay spat. He used to do that when we were children and I never found it a particularly endearing habit.

“Indeed I can and will, Mr. Hovoid!” Mrs. Rivka then pulled a small bottle of poison from her pocket. “I found this in your carriage, tucked under the driver’s seat. I noticed also, when investigating the contents of your barn, that you have recently acquired a pair of black quarterhorses. Lovely pair, they are, but you might have taken the time to wipe their hooves.” Mrs. Rivka then pulled a lovely white linen handkerchief from her pocket and displayed a smear of dark red blood on it. “I took this sample from the stallion’s rear right hoof. More remains if anyone cares to check.”

Then a dreadful thing happened. Jay Hovoid, the boy I’d known as gentle from our first steps as babies, drew a gun from his pocket and cocked it.

“Yes, that’s all well and good, Mrs. Rivka. It appears you paid attention before your policeman husband died. He taught you well. Now, prepare to meet him.” With that, Jay pulled the trigger.

At the same moment, Mrs. Rivka snapped the bullwhip loose and cracked it at Jay. She met her target, breaking his arm neatly. The gun went flying. Another crack of the whip slashed across his neck. He collapsed and bled bright red into the lush grass. He died in moments. Another crack made us all jump, and I could see that it was not the whip, but a bullet ripping through Mrs. Rivka. Blood stained the blue of her suit, just under her heart. She too collapsed and breathed her last, whispering her husband’s name.

I tried to see who had caught the gun and made that terrible shot, but I could not see through the tears. My dear old friend Jay. And Mrs. Rivka. Does anyone truly know anyone else?

With that, dearest Diary, I believe I will take to my bed. Today’s events have overwhelmed me. I’ve sent the errand boy for the doctor in hopes that he may have a remedy for this terrible headache.

Sincerely (as always),
Miss Jenny Wren

Yes we got a mafia member! Maybe there's hope after all.

quote:
most excellent oatmeal
[ROFL] that's what Bill and Ted eat!

By the way, if anyone was concerned, we took my boy to the doctor and he has a viral infection in his throat ie tonsilitis. It's pretty yucky in there as the doctor told me, but now he's resting and watching "Between the Lions" and being a sweet boy. He's so good when he's sick.

I don't want to suggest that anyone is mafia! Two days ago I voted Brettly because I didn't really want to jump on the bandwagon and vote Ryan, but I forgot that I didn't have to vote. Now I'm all suspected. [Cry] I will come to tonight's town meeting and see what everyone thinks before I vote.

added: SirReal, how will we even know it's a policeman and not a mafia person?

In the novelizations, Bill and Ted both have low cholesterol levels, too. Just thought that should be noted.

True,
But we can't just BLINDLY name somebody. There has to be some input or else it's just anybody's guess, and we can't afford to make anymore mistakes.

But, it's also not a good idea for a policeman to put everything on the line again like Rivka did...if you lose all your cops, the mafia automatically wins. Yeesh. It's tough. Perhaps if a cop knows someone who is definitely a citizen, they could email or something and start a couple votes for someone mafia. (that way, the mafia isn't so sure who's a cop.) Is this against the rules? Cops can communicate with citizens on the side, right???

By the way, great story today jeni!! [Big Grin] rivka kicks...tush, and Mr. Hovoid, you were great too!!

Thanks, Narnia. [Smile]

For the mafia to win, they must outnumber the citizens, not kill all the policemen as described in the IRL version. Right now, it's very close.

So close, actually, that I've re-introduced a role not originally part of this game. It is hinted at in today's story.

Zan [Razz] You're too busy to play, remember?

PSI, I'm glad to hear your son is on the mend. When my son was little, I used to treasure the times he was sick, because it was one of the few times he'd slow down long enough to be cuddly. Now he's more cuddly, but bigger than my lap will hold. I think in just another year or so, he'll be taller than me. *sigh* It goes by WAY too fast.

edit: You're most welcome Indiana Rivka. [Big Grin]

Oh, my! This town is as bad as Cabot Cove. So, we can have a doctor now? Can I have a veterinarian? Maybe I'd feel better. At least today I am both at home and awake.

I did see the most luscious black stallion today. That's me, always pining after bad boys...

Police, I responded to your email earlier today. I just re-sent my answer. Let me know if you didn't get it. I appear to be getting your emails just fine.

edit: in either case, the person you asked about is not mafia.

Sorry about the late post in the day, but I didn't get my answer until just before my family went out to dinner and we just got back (it's my brother's and my last night home before we go back to college [Big Grin] )

Okay, I am police. I asked about SirReal today and he is a citizen. Rivka and I both seriously suspect PSI Teleport and Sopwith as being mafia. We are unsure about Avadaru and Advice for Robots. One or both of them are in the mafia. Brettly is a citizen!! Do not vote for him or the game will be over.

If there are truly five mafia members, which we don't know for sure, then all of the above listed are mafia, so I suggest we just pick one and lynch them.

(edit: To fix obvious grammar mistake.)

The mafia should know who the mafia is. They should have all been communicating with each other all along.

In the event of a tie, jeniwren will decide to kill both or neither of the lynchees, based on circumstance, I suppose.

I am not mafia. I couldn't have even killed anyone or done much of anything recently because I've been taking care of my son. He really is sick and I was online this morning for a second while he was chilling out on the couch but while I was here I did NOT kill anyone.

edit: I still think Avadaru is mafia but I'm changing my vote to Sopwith for unity's sake. [Big Grin]

Please don't kill me, y'all - I'm innocent - you'll be making a big mistake! Don't do it! I'm not mafia.

My vote is for Sopwith.

Edited to add the fact that both Sopwith and PSI are keen on lynching me is highly suspicious. I think they're in cahoots! I haven't been to any of the town meetings so I'm not sure what has been said about me by Ryan or anyone else, but I had nothing to do with any of the deaths.

Sorry guys, I went to 6 flags...hee hee hee. But my vote is for Sopwith. I mean, it's a little too late to just guess randomly, right? A normal citizen would have some suspicions about mafia, but a mafia wouldn't have a real reason except for trying to get rid of us citizens.

Edit to say: Rivka had a list of suspected mafia members. I think we should believe that list, since we all know that Ravika was a policeman. It's not a positive list, but I think she's got a good idea!

Hi, everyone! Sorry I took so long... my husband is repairing windows today so we can get our house refinanced, and he cut himself taking out a pane of the old glass. Getting the bleeding stopped was hard, because he's on blood thinners, but it's stopped now. He won't let me take him to the ER for stitches. Men! [Angst] I guess it's not really that big of a cut. I pput 2 butterflies on it and it hasn't bled for about 20 minutes. I still have to watch him, though, if he goes to sleep.

Anyway, I unbolded Avadaru, and my vote is for Sopwith.

Oh, this wasn't bad. You should have seen us the day his groin plug broke open the day of his last heart cath just as we walked in the door at home. There was blood all over the house, where he walked around looking for me. I don't know why he didn't say anything. After I got that bleeding stopped, I called the hospital, and they said if it bleeds again to call 911 BEFORE applpying pressure. Thanks for tellin' me after the thing lets loose. It was kind of cool, though. I expected to have a hard time cleaning up the mess, but those little blood dots swept right up off the floor. Must have been the Mop-n-Glo.
