I could have added this into Duragon's thread, probably but it's not exactly the same.
I was going to upload a number of music CDs into my computer, converting to mp3 format, so that I could listen to them on a shuffle format without having to change discs all the time (and so I can leave the discs in my car, lest I go on some long drive without them). RealOne Player indicates that it can do it, but when I click on the "Save Tracks" I get a message telling me that my generic CD-ROM driver might cause problems, and asks if I would like to install an alternate one. I click yes, and get a message that I already have the latest driver and should check again later.
So I still can't do anything but play individual CDs. Am I sunk because I have an old cruddy computer?

As long as you're reading the CD-ROM tracks as data, not simply playing them as music files directly through a speaker connection, you should be okay. And if you can install programs using your CD drive, you can read CD-ROM tracks as data.
I would advise against using Real One for anything, if you have the option. Plenty of good, free rippers are out there.

I like using dBpowerAMP's music convertor. It is free (and has no ads or spyware, unlike Real). The interface is easy to master and it works well. The only downside is that I can't remember how to get it to name the mp3s (so that I don't have to go back and rename all of them so they're recognizable).

remove realplayer as soon as possible. RealMedia sucks.
unfortunately, my favorite ripper, Sonic Foundry's Siren, is no longer availible, but Cakewalk Pyro is cheap and Music Match is free... and both do the same thing, too.
