Our lost kitten came home! I heard a crazy yowl from the porch, and there she was. She jumped through my hub's computer room window, and proceeded to eat, nonstop, for twenty minutes.
She had some tar on her foot. I think she got stuck in construction, maybe in a sewer pipe. There is loads of digging all around us, as they are putting in a new sewer.
Anyway, she is home and safe, and we are taking her to the vet. The kids are ecstatic.
Thank you all SO much for your kind words. They meant the world to me, and gave me a perfect blend of hope and realism, exactly what I needed. Twelve days, snd she made it back.
On the other hand, we lost everything on our hard drive.
Every
Thing.
My writing for the past two years(I know, I am an idiot, no need to tell me) My critiques, stories, journals, poetry, resumes, letters.
Olivet, I will need your story agian!!
Music lists.(huge for my husband) Games. Pictures.
Back on the other hand, Evie returned. My husband and I are thinking of her return and the hard drive loss as a sign to start afresh. We are at a turning point in our lives right now, so this will be OK, even though it is difficult, in a numbing sort of way.
Thank you again for your kindnes, hope, and prayers.

You can't hear about that without thinking "What if it were me?" I guess the correct form is "What if that happened to me?" "What if she was me" certainly doesn't make any sense.
You know, I've had several instances when I was writing a potentially regrettable email and the computer fritzed. Very strange. My kids have never seen the new graemlins before, so let's get an appropriate one.

Jeez. I don't know what that means in the grand scheme of things... Perhaps it's a lesson to backup your drive? Hm... I'd better do that soon... Anyway, I'm SO SO glad your kitten came home! YAY!!!

Strangely, though, it feels cleansing to start all over. The computer is so clean and neat, not cluttered like my brain. I have retrieved some stuff. We did a backup a few months ago, and my crit group has some of the most important writing.
It is making me want to get back on the writing track again.
The cat is SO happy to be home. She is very thin, and follows my husband everywhere he goes, making me sure that she was stuck somewhere, poor gal, and not taken in by loving folks.

If it's really important stuff, you can pay someone to get the stuff off of your hard drive. Though you might want to give the brain trust on the forum a few hours to see if they might know of a program that you might be able to use.

So glad the cat is alive. Please give her lots of love for me and keep her inside and safe. It looks like you've been given more than one lesson, and a reprieve, to boot.

Elizabeth, the same sort of thing happened to me a while back (sans the cat situation, though ) My computer died, along with pretty much everything I've ever written or saved, hundreds of pictures, etc....I knew my laziness would catch up to me - I just never bothered to put it all on disks!
At least your story had a happy ending, with the cat coming home. So glad to hear that she's safe.

So glad kitty made it home! Poor thing sounds like she had a rough couple weeks. Bet she's about as glad to be home as you are to have here there.
Sorry to hear about your puter. I had one die (horrible grinding noises when I tried to turn it on ) about 18 months back. No fun at all -- good luck recovering data.
