A few days ago I was sitting, waiting for English to start (this has nothing to do with my English class, the teacher wasn’t even there yet) when I overhead some of my classmates discussing a magazine. We were asked to bring in “images” to analyze: preferably (or at least, it was easier to do it this way) magazine ads. One girl had brought in an edition of one of the “women’s self help” magazines; I don’t remember which one, Vogue, or something (I think it was Vogue but I wasn’t paying much attention). She’d found an article in it on “How to attract guy’s attention” and was going through the list. Since I wasn’t exactly dying to find out how to get that cute guy to finally notice me, my attention level dropped; but I did hear one of the “methods” of getting noticed. The magazine told the reader to wear a thin shirt with no bra underneath. At Purdue it seems a high percentage of the girls already go around with a basically see through shirt, but at least they wear bras; I couldn’t believe that’s what the magazine was espousing as a good idea. Maybe to get some girl to go out with me I should just strip naked and do a traditional Russian dance in the middle of campus.
Or am I off base here, is this just a stupid magazine that’s not really representative off what’s going on in the world? Or do some of you think it was perfectly good advice?

My wife told me that she read in "Cosmo" or something like that that the way to get a guy to notice you was to find a guy in a clothing store, ask for his opinion on what you're about to try on, lead him to the changing room and proceed to change clothes with the door only partly closed.

Yah, when I see girls walking around with basically nothing on I always feel giulty (kind of guilt by association) and just look at the ground and pretend I didn't even notice them.

Articles like that scare the crap out of me (has 2 little adorable, innocent, beautiful, amazing girls ).
Truth be told though, I don't think that sort of stuff is really representative of what is normal. Rather I think it is representative of what the media wants folks (especially the target audience) to think is normal. That belief (however misguided) gives me some measure of hope for the future.

Sweetie, you need to pay attention to your surroundings. Vogue isn't a "self-help" magazine. It's a fashion magazine. How are you ever going to land a chick if you don't even speak their language?

Sure, girls do things like that to attract the attention of guys. The question is, are they looking for a husband or a fun time?

Amka: I think we all know the asnwer to that one. Any relationship I involve myself in (girlfriend boyfriend relationship obviously ), I want to end up in marriage, asumming, of course, that we would make a good couple. Yet I can still see the appeal of dating "just to have fun" but it seems like this type of thing has to be degrating to someone's self respect.

Actually, I believe the technical term is "Advertisement magazine". The amount of pages in them that are purely ads on both sides total more than fifty percent of the magazine.

Hobbes, Bogue has been publishing stuff like this for atleast 25 years. It doesn't seem to have caused a collapse of the bra industry yet.

Really? I obviously wouldn't know, but it surprises me that the fashion undustry (or whatever this magazine represents) has been saying stuff like... whatever this is like, for 25 years.

And encouraging wearing thin shirts? I assume your referring to the feminist movement here Kayla? It strike me that the point of those demonstrations was to show the inequality of gender roles, not to turn one’s self into a sexual object. Or were you thinking of something else?

Hobbes, in one form or another, "they" have been telling women what to wear since the dawn of time. Either we've always been breaking down as a society, or it isn't any worse now than it was then.

Yah, but suggesting clothing for females is not the same as suggesting women wear clothes (or lack there of) to make them look more like a slut.

For chicks to get noticed by guy between 18 and 25 they have to be between 18 and 28 and wear less clothes. for guys in the same age bracket to get noticed they have to wear nice khakis and nice button up shirt, shave and comb their hair.
Women want confidence and a trophy they can show off. Men want sex.

Yah, but just because it happened the doesn't mean it's good that it happened. Not to say the women should be restricted in what they wear. I just don't think that freedom to wear skimpy clothes = it's a good idea to wear skimpy clothes.

Heh. It's amazing where I can disagree with both Kayla and Hobbes at the same time on the same issue.
Kayla, I think many of these magazines do objectify women and break you down to your essential compenents -- tits, thighs, and ass. I don't think they're promoting the feminist movement or female sexual liberation; instead, they seem pretty damn useful for titillating males and setting insane standards for women.
Hobbes, you seem more concerned with yourself being offended by bra-less women than by the global female predicament of objectification and degradation.
I have no problem with fewer clothing for women, provided it's meant to fight against the sexually repressive stigmas women have faced since we first evolved into talking monkeys. Then again, in modern culture, female sexuality seems more a tool for advertising and cheap thrills, and seems to serve more to decrease female liberation than to strengthen them. Hobbes' example of a magazine urging women to not wear bras so they can excite men is offensive to me -- a woman not wearing a bra is not.
Hope I don't sound too stiff there.
