Mick, it started (IIRC) with this latest batch of spambots, sometime within the last 3-6 months. Everyone was getting ticked, and we found out it was getting hard on Our Fair Moderator (Papa Janitor, formerly-and-sometimes-now Papa Moose) to deal with all of the crap. This is a way of alerting him quickly by "whistling" (see "report post" icon at bottom of the posts) the offensive messages -- OSC wants this to be a family-friendly forum -- and making it more of a game than a chore to deal with.
Plus we're all about the mayhem and hijinks, and the school auditorium plays to raise money for the orphanage.
Many of us have known each other for 5, 6, even 10 or more years. We hang out at get-togethers, we know when our friends' dads come down with cancer, we celebrate when one of us gets published. And Moose has been involved forever -- we know his kids, we adore his wife, and he's just the most awesome mensch of a guy you could ever want to have around. So anything to make his life easier and less of a pain in the bum is a good thing.
Thus the races, in brief. No prizes other than bragging rights, just a lot of goofing around. Par for the course, here.
