So, I'm looking into getting an iPod, not merely for recreational purposes, but also as a portabel storage device since my laptop doesn't have a zip drive and I'm being forced unwillingly into the 21st century. I considered getting a jump drive, but if I can justify spending more and at the same time increasing my ability to rot my brain with rock and roll anywhere at anytime, I figured why not?
So the best price I can get here in town is $269.00 for a 15 gig, $369.00 for a 20 gig, and $469.00 for a 30. Is this reasonable? Is there a better solution? And which size is best? Would a 15 gig hold my entire U2 collection?

You may see those prices come down a bit - Apple just recently released new models of the iPod, including a 40gb. I'm sure our Apple mavens will have the best info on that.

You'll probably see 60 and 80 in the not too distant future - those are the largest notebook hard drives that are becoming widely available.

Though they use notebook drives, they use a special drive that's only being produced by Toshiba - I think (I'm not positive about the manufacturer).
The other HD based MP3 players out there use standard sized HD's, which is one of the reasons why they're a bit cheaper.

Why not get one of these and one of these ? Both good, reliable name-brand-type products, together they'll cost you less than a small ipod. I'd be very surprised if you couldn't fit your entire U2 collection on a single mp3 cd, and cds are somewhat more versatile than external hard drives, at least for data transmission.

If you're looking for a good price on an iPod and don't mind a refurb model, go to PowerMax. They have decent iPod prices, but their laptops are insanely overpriced.

I know that my U2 collection (which is not complete, but fairly extensive) will not fit on a CD....

You must need to move a lot of data around.
I would recommend the smaller, more portable USB devices, which store 128MB or 256MB, for just transporting files around. These move between the MAC and PC format without any hassle, and plug into any computer running MAC OS (8, I think?), Win 98SE, ME, XP, or 2000.
I've used one, and I'm sold on the concept. But, if you need 15 GB, then yeah, iPod...

Those usb flash drives are neat. They actually have capacities up to 512mb and 1gb, now, though they are expensive. Some manufacturers even let you use them as an mp3 player (Creative, for one, has the Muvo). Mac OS supports starts with OS 8.6, Win98/se can work but you usually have to install drivers first.
TheTick, font of nearly useless flash drive info.

this also supports wma. I've never used that format, but it's available. And firmware upgrades mean support for other future formats, which is nice.
As for the usb drives... I've got an external hard drive for my laptop, as I couldn't find one with an internal drive as big as I wanted when I bought it. I also thought it might be nice for data transfer. You'd be surprised how hard it is to do usb transfers onto random computers. School computers, maybe, but almost every time I've ever tried to transfer some (non-copyrighted) data onto a friend's computer, I find that they've filled up all their usb drives with worthless crap. So, not only do I have to move furniture and crawl around the back of their inconveniently placed computer stations, once I get there, I usually have to follow tangles of wires until I find a usb port connected to something that isn't immediately vital, unplug it, plug in my stuff, and redo the whole process when it's over. I guess everybody's different, but I find it much easier now to just burn off a 20-cent CD, pop it in their drive, and be done with it.
That's just my experience, though.
