What is it with guys and whistling, anyway?
I mean... seriously, a girl can't wear a skirt without being whistled at? And what makes guys think that the whistle is at all seen as a good thing on the receiving end?
::laughs and shrugs a little:: I'm sorry, but I really don't get it. As one of my friends says, "Compliment appreciated, delivery could use some work".

Saxon75, I'm sorry, but I think your whistling at guys is immoral. It doesn't mean I don't like you, or that we can't be friends. I love the whistler (well, not really love, but you know, a manly kind of like, which is clearly what the word "love" means in this context) but I hate the whistle. We're all working on our personal sins, and you're no worse than anybody else for your homoerotic whistling, but I simply can't pretend that there's nothing wrong with it. It very clearly says several places in the bible that it is sinful for guys to whistle at other guys. Whistling at people of your own gender is a "gateway" erotic act, that inexorably leads to homosexual sex, pedophilia, bestiality, and "Lite" beer. I hope you can understand why I need to take this position.

Just because you're cuter than the rest of us dosen't mean you have to tell us all the time Pix, we've figured it out on out own.

<laughs> I used to get so embarrassed about this. It really is sort of a creepy thing to do, isn't it?
Any kind of reaction that seems involuntary isn't unpleasant, though, and can even be flattering, like heads swiveling. (Actual car wrecks sort of bother me.) But whooping, whistling, and hollering is not really directed at you-as-a-person, is it? To whom IS it directed? I really can't figure this out either. It's kind of like fan adulation. So I sort of do a little Princess Di wave and nod of acknowledgement or something. Trying to accept it with dignity. <laughs> I'd be interested to hear how other girls respond.
Are there any guys here who have ever done this? To whom was it directed? What sort of response did you expect or look for? I truly am curious.

I thought the whistle was a way of alerting other guys to the fact that there is a good looking lady walking by. Sort of a sharing, bonding...thing.

I don't whistle at women. I think that's rude and demeaning. Doesn't mean I don't think a whistle, though.

I never think a whistle. My thought is usually "Yowzahs!"
Pixie, the amount of whistle you get is inversely proportional to the length of your skirt. When guys whistle, they're thinking, "Now that's some real estate!"

I ususally keep my appreciations to myself, mostly because I am not a good whistler.
Don't guys usually whistle at a girl to show off for their friends/construction co-workers? Seriously, the only guys I have ever witnessed whistling at a girl were trying to show of for some other guys they were with.
Such a thing is pretty much pathetic, IMHO. They're possibly embarassing a lone female to "impress" their friends. "Look at me! I'm a big stud that can bug a girl!" Real manly.

when girls shout and hoot and whistle at me, i do the same thing back. when they dont, and they look hot, i have the stock, 'well arent you looking lovely today?' to fall back on. but it's not my forte.
