I'd like to write you all a note
In perfect iambs wrought
And have from each a quick reply
In matching feet

If you choose to ignore all those iambs above
Anapestic is fine for the prancing of lines
And to Slash you can rap in its tripping ascent

Bob would master trochees faster
Bouncing phoneme after phoneme
Good for jokes with rapid terseness

Hobbes would like waltzing with delicate dactyls and
Pixiest probably pukes at their merriment

And so I guess I'll form more feet
To talk of Rush and Bush and school
The many matters we now face
For tired am I of bitching in prose

The final line above should read
"For I'm too tired to bitch in prose"

Perhaps "for I'm too worn to bitch in prose?"

"Tired" doesn't scan, unless you pronounce it very strangely.

<-- Texan, pronounces 'tired' monosyllabically.

Good point, my man.

For some reason I haven't heard the word monosyllabically in a long time, I forgot how fun it is to say.

If only I could guess what an iamb
is or says or does I might have a chance
of following the inestimable
señor tazón in his silly juego.

For those who have not guessed, I like to cheat
by using a Spanish word when English
simply will not work in its place así.
el crocodilo no es poeta.

To write Iamb is such a chore
And I speak no Spanish Senore
Though I have take'n extra time
To force the meter and the rhyme

[edited to fix meter in 2nd line]

Boy, I expected more responses as Hatrackers attempt to show off their literary cleverness. Where are all of the English major types?

Its the thread name. Metric---People are afraid that they have to convert inches to grams or some such. That's math. English Majors hate math.

Meanwhile our scientific community check the thread and screams. They hate English.

Wow. I'm shocked at what you've written here
Your iambs are all skewed;
If you by chance were forced to write
Some poem to save your very life
It seems you would be screwed.

If we declared some day to be "Talk in Heroic Couplets Day" would anyone be able to do it?

I tried it once and much silence ensued. Maybe that wasn't such a bad thing... [Smile]

It's just, I think, that when I read much verse,
My brain that form begins to oft rehearse,
And since true ease is due to art not chance,
As dear old Alex said (invoking dance),
I thought the exercise of growing used
To verse in this form actually produced
Might free some dam of stricture in our minds
And loose a flood of good (or sorry) rhymes.

And so I offer this enchanting sport,
That we each month one day may fair cavort,
The first occurrence of a Saturday
Henceforth be named Heroic Couplet Day.
