Isn't there a movie like this coming? I saw Intolerable Cruelty twice this weekend, and both times there was a preview for a movie called "Calendar Girls" about some fifty-something women who decide to make money with an easier method than a bake sale.

When can we expect a T_Smith calendar? You can use jello molds tastefully located in the proper places.

When right after I go to wenchcon my funds get totally screwed, even with all my careful budgeting, and I realize that I will be 4,000 dollars short, there will be a T_Smith magazine.

I'll ask OSC if he could sponser this calendar.

A group of middle-aged and elderly ladies produced a nude calendar in 1999 to raise money for leukemia (the husband of one was diagnosed with it). I've got a copy of the North American version, released in 2000.
The ladies of Rhylstone are brave souls indeed, and their pictures were taken with humor, affection, and a great deal of class. And for those of us who get tired of imperfect bodies always getting the short end of the stick, it was wonderful to see how popular it became.

Here's an article about them.

Yes, I saw the preview for that and it cracked me up.

So, is this the new herosim? Naked farmers save the school district!

We've got some serious problems if people feel this is the only way to raise funds.

Honestly, I'd prefer the bake sale.

The only way? Certainly not. A novel way to attract attention, sure.
It's worth noting that the farmer's calendar (and the Rhystone one) are not explicit or even racy. They are (to me, anyway) funny and heartwarming, and definitely more interesting than this year's Chippendale's calendar or whatever Hooter's puts out.

I find nothing offensive in the farmer calendar. I do, however, find it distressing that people work so hard at other pursuits and stripping is all it takes for "easy money." I'm more disturbed about the society that is making this possible than the actual participants.

Please elaborate on this. What should society be doing to make this kind of thing not possible?

What disturbs me is that we've spent so much time and energy over the last few hundred years to make nudity so wrong.

The people who decided that nudity was amoral are at least partly responsible for this outbreak of interest.

I'm all for these calendars. Maybe people will start to realize that it's no big deal.

Rather than re-arguing the same old points, I think I'll just link to a concise statement here.

Annie, I wasn't trying to go there in this thread. I just found this whole story quaint and amusing if anything. I don't think a calendar of nude old men has much artistic merit if any. I'll respectfully disagree with you about the Nude in Art, but I don't think that this is Art in the capital letter sense.

Hrm...that's a totally different argument.

Do you really think people were buying pictures of these naked old guys for sexual pleasure?

It's a novelty thing.

What I don't think is that humans will reach your described "higer level" just by wearing more clothing. Maybe if nudity were more accepted, and THEN we decided not to objectify, we'd have progressed. To say that we need to hide the objects of our objectification is as much as saying that we haven't.

Well, Banna, maybe you need to go to T's "efficient fluffing" thread. [Wink]

If you can't start a good fluff thread without it being taken over by serious discussion, maybe you need to work on your sense of humor! [Razz]

T was doing some very efficent fluffing earlier in this thread! The problem with strategic Jello mold placements is that Jello is transparent. Maybe he should use custard instead.

Jello is transparent, but many jello molds are not.

More often greenish, grayish, or sorta orange. Hard to tell unless you let them grow for a while.

I don't think nudity and jello is any sense can be considered an artistically gifted scene.

Nor do I feel like I'm a very artistically looking person anyway.

Maybe if you were trying to express beauty through a scared to death, scrawny, mortified, naked guy with jello....

Nope... still not beauty in any sense.

PS- Since I do not sit around and stare at nudity in any form all day, my opinion on the matter would not be too strong, and since weak opinions are easily refutted, I think I'll continue fluffing.

On Hatrack, ANYTHING is fodder for serious discussion. <laughs>

"Guess what, guys? We're having a BABY!"
"Did you think about overpopulation when you made this decision?"

What's really bad will be when it gets to be so old hat that nobody pays attention anymore, you know? How will it feel when the firefighters pose nude and everyone is like "oh no! not another nudie fundraising calendar!" and buys it to do their civic duty then tosses it out. <laughs> What would it be like to be Mr. June then? Talk about feeling cheap!

What do you guys think about kissing booths for fund raising purposes? Or backrubs? Would you let your daughter do that?

I'm too squeamish even for beauty pageants. <laughs> I think they're completely revolting. When my nieces were in one once I was having fits. I think showing dogs and horses may be nice but daughters?

Wait...a...minute. If they're willing to pay a dollar just for the kiss...HOW MUCH WOULD THEY PAY FOR THE WHOLE 'ENCHILADA'? Wow. Being the selfless fellow that I am, I could screw my to a cure for baldness in no time. [Smile]

Jello molds - where do you think T's booblets came from? I told him they had been shown to cause cancer in other minions, but did he listen to me? Nooooo, of course not.
