Well, last Saturday I saw something really strange. I was watching my weekly episode of Lawrence Welk (right before "Keeping Up Appearances" and "As Time Goes By") and there it was. Annie...on Lawrence Welk. She must age really well. It was the weirdest thing I have ever seen. Annie, singing the "Hubby-Gone Blues". Annie, pretending to be a horse, dancing around a make believe merry-go-round, and going "mm-BAA-BAA, mm-BAA-BAA". Annie, playing the spoons. My friends, Annie is more skilled than any of us could have ever dreamed. And, wow, Annie looks so cute dressed like a farmgirl.

But seriously, that chick looked just like her. I almost fell off the couch laughing as I watched "Annie" get involved in the most hilarious situations. Another good reason to watch public programming. [Smile]

What can I say? I needed a little extra cash.

This is a little frightening, though. For one thing, a friend of mine swears I look just like her doll Tessa, which is disturbing in and of itself. But for another thing - what are you doing watching Laurence Welk?!?

Are you kidding?? For fashion tips!

Honestly, my husband grew up with only PBS, so Lawrence Welk was his main source of entertainment. Plus. it comes on before my BBC programmes. Lawrence is awesome! Plus, it's so...wholesome. [Smile]

Lawrence Welk = flashbacks to childhood.

I was raised watching LW. My mother always watched when I was a kid, and still does when she happens to turn by when the old episodes are on PBS. Also, when my grandmother was very ill in the year or so before she passed, she would literally stay in bed all week so that she could get up and watch LW on Saturday evening. We would always go to her house and watch with her.

Also, I went to high school with a girl whose father sang on Welk's show. In fact, she was on one of the Christmas shows, when they always had all the kids of the cast go on the show and sing. I remember wondering why Kathy was walking around school with her guitar all the time in the couple months before Christmas in 10th grade, but I never got around to actually asking her about it. Mystery was solved when the Christmas show was on: there she was, playing the guitar and singing a Christmas song. I happened on that episode a year or two ago on PBS, and it was really strange seeing it again.

I can't bear the music on Lawrence Welk. It's so completely cheesy. The arrangements are all hokey and bad, the songs are awful to begin with, and the performances are about as schlocky as can possibly be, of course. Everyone knows this, I know, so why is this atrocity committed? Why is it allowed to continue?

My father, who for some reason was given a stronger stomach for such things than I, used to tease me by letting the channel linger there while he was flipping through. He thought my hypersensitivity was funny. <laughs> I've been known to bolt from stores in panic if they play music that's too awful. Anyone who will outlaw Muzak in public places would get my vote. I'll be a single issue voter on that issue, if only it existed! I'd like to nuke the Muzak factory, in fact. Would anyone like to help?

Annie, I hope they paid you extremely well. I can't imagine how much they'd have to pay me to be on that show. I hope you took your earplugs. [Smile] [Smile] [Smile]

You may think it's cheesy, but to the hundreds of thousands of older folks who watch it every week, it's reminescent of their glory days, when all that stuff was the norm. [Smile] Really, I think I'd rather watch cheesy stuff than the stuff on TV now days, with all the immorality that gets stuffed into my head. It's scary to see half-naked girls on TV every five minutes, and then is it any wonder men tend to have narrow views of the way woman should be? (By the way, that is also extended to the way women view men: as dolts who can't even put their pants on straight.)

Oh yeah! Women should wear glitter dresses and dance backwards in high heels, instead. <laughs>
