Please. That's a heck of an assumption to make, considering that he didn't throw or land a punch, compared to Martínez, who already did throw a ball at somebody's head and threatened to do more. It's disgusting that he was not ejected.
You got an excuse for that groundskeeper who jumped into the bullpen too?

It's not like he punched him, just moved out of the way and used Zimmer's momentum to push him down.
Chin music is part of baseball, especially at a Boston-NY game, and all the players know it. If you're 70, you probably shouldn't be running into the frenzy of a bench-clearing brawl.
The groundskeeper who jumped into the bullpen should be arrested.

As mack said, it wasn't so much a 72-year-old MAN after Pedro... More like a cyborg.
But that said, I think Pedro, Zimmer, Manny, and Garcia should all have been ejected.
And that idiot in the bullpen is no different than any number of Yankees incidences... THere's a reason they don't sell beer in the outfield bleachers at Yankee Stadium anymore.

When the benches clear, the managers and coaches often come out to get between the players and calm them down. That's what I think Zimmer was doing, although I guess we'll never know. I think it's wild how people are assuming that he was charging Martínez.

There's no reason the Sox should have been coming out anyway. That pitch was high but it was not inside. And Martínex did try to bean a Yankee.

Yup, maybe the groundskeeper wasn't the idiot... But we'll see.
And if you can't see that Zimmer was acting aggressively toward Pedro, then you are biased. He wasn't trying to get between playersl; there was no one else near Pedro.
Plus, Zimmer has always been a hothead. At times loveable, at times annoying, but always a hothead.

Personally I thought they were both arses. Since when is it okay for coaches to throw down? Particularly at other players? They're supposed to be above the fray, and Zimmer did attempt to throw on Pedro. Pedro had no class as well, there were a manifold of things he could do given the situation, he could have done worse (knocking him out with a haymaker) but he could have done a lot better as well.
It was just really, really stupid all around, Zimmer, Pedro, and even Manny, whose always been a bit of a dunce to begin with anyway (his classic Canseco-esque moment was trying to catch a ball that him in his ankle by leaping the wall in New York in the ALDS several years ago).

My first exposure to this was reading about it while eating my pizza when I went out for some chow today. I remembered this thread title and made the connection.
First off, its amazing how biased different newspapers are. The New York Post was entirely against Martinez, with the frontpage headline being "Fenway Punk". The story says that Zimmer was "coming toward Pedro in a clumsy manner" when Pedro threw him down.
The local paper though said that Zimmer was going to punch Pedro. I haven't seen it, but considering the sources, the local one is definitly the least biased.
I thought it was funny that in the post it was said "Pedro didn't have to throw him, he could have just held him".
Please! If someone is coming after me ready to punch me, I'm gonna punch them first. You're lucky if I just throw you.
Sure the guy was old, but my grandpa can still probably give me a good fight if we threw down and he's eighty. If he didn't want to risk injury, he could have stayed his fat ass in the dugout like he was supposed to.
And if you think I'm biased, keep in mind that I want the Yankees to win the series. (Then I want them to beat the Cubs, singlehandedly keeping both curses intact )

Come on, Zimmer tried to attack Pedro, it was obviously self defense. If Pedro ran into the Yankee bullpen and attacked Zimmer then it would definitely be assualt, but that's obviously not the case. Pedro almost hit someone in the head you say? Didn't Clemens actually hit Piazza in the head? Did anything happen to Clemens? Not that I can recall.
Why do the Yankees demand an apology? Because a groundskeeper was cheering for his team? Certainly if Pedro shouldn't have thrown down Zimmer then five guys should be able to handle a groundskeeper without leaving cleatmarks.
