I saw this for the first time about 2 weeks ago and again tonight. I keep renting it. I need to just break down and buy it to save myself money.
Was anyone else touched by this movie like I was? It was one of those moments when I find myself willing to give up all that I have in the world to know friendships like those portrayed in that film...to know love like that. It was almost overwhelming the first time I saw it. But then, I'm also the schmaltz queen and I eat this stuff up.
Beautiful movie though. The performances were delightful. That's the only word that can adequately describe them, as cheesy as it is. *sigh* This film is right up there in the midst of my favorites.

I'll have to check it out. I adore Dickens, but this is one of his that I've never read (nor seen!)

Annie, YOU, out of everyone I've met on this board, were the one I thought of when starting this thread. You've just GOTTA see it and tell me if you don't CRY and fall madly in love with the dynamic wandering duo of Smike and Nicholas.
It's wonderful. You know how you felt after you saw Little Women for the first time? Kind of like that, but all it's own.
And Nathan Lane's part is fantastic, his little band of actors a delight...Christopher Plummer is dynamite at being nasty. Great all around.

Oh - I adored it! I bullied my roommates into renting it and we just finished. My friend Abby was hesitant because her sister the English teacher hates Dickens. How can one hate Dickens?
I am so in love with Nicholas. And dear little Smike!
I'm getting too ferklempt to type! *sniff*

Isn't it just amazing? I'm so glad you rented it. *sniff* I'm going to buy it when I'm not poor anymore and watch it over and over again...
and when you come out to visit, we'll watch it too. I've got to get the book now. I'm on a 19th century english lit kick. I just read Persuasion and now I'm reading Bleak House. Might has well add this one to the list.

I just finished this book. *sniffs* It's just wonderful. I can't say enough good things about it. I hate to admit that I haven't read a full Dickens novel since I tried to battle my way through David Copperfield when I was much too young to appreciate it or even bear it. So, now I'm on a quest to read everything else.
Oh, and I found a great website for any of you that might happen to be on a 19th century kick like I have been for 2 months. It's called Eras of Elegance. Fun stuff.
