The other night I was up late sewing, and I had a dream about the hatrack threads unravelling. I thought about it and realised that that's what hatrack is: it's a fabric and the threads weave us together into a community. When something as big as the hug thread disappears, part of the community "unravells". These threads are what keeps hatrack together as a community.

LOL. I know what you mean, but it's a little unfair to single Nate out.
Actually, to me, I can almost feel threads like that... To me, a story weaves itself together, which is odd, because I've never weaved or even sewn or crocheted. I dunno what it is about the idea that just makes *sense* to me.

One of my math teachers had a dream where he was a giant pair of scissors cutting moebius strips. But that's another story.
I'm not sure it's the threads themselves that weave us together. Sure, the hug thread was an important part of hatrack, and it's sad to see it go. But I think what weaves us together is the friendships we've formed with each other. Deleting a thread can never take that away. After all, we can always make another hug thread.

Is it such a good thing that community is so tight? Whoo boy i'm going to be killed for that one.
But seriously, this forum is no longer a discussion. Anybody who actually wants to discuss something gets shunned. This close knit community seems to to get together to agree about stuff.
Its rare that I see any discussion going on, and the last really interesting one was one I started. By interesting I mean a debate, like, a real one.
Right now all this site is friends chatting. Not really what a discussion forum is about if you ask me.

Icarus... as long as it's the Kansas version they play in Highlander: The Series , I am a go on a jam session. Of course then I'll burst into tears, and I'll need some ice cream to cheer me up. Where's Annie when you need her... where's the ice cream thread for that matter.
And as for the topic, those threads and connections that Hushidh could see in the Homecoming series came to mind for me. But since both come from OSC's mind, that should be understandable.

Actually, I wasn't being egotistical at all. I'm just saying, I'm really the only one who creates a forum with alot of outright disagreement (that i've seen, I could be wrong) . Maybe its because I know everybody hates me so I have no reputation on the line. Which is why I say, the closeness of the hatrack enviroment takes away from the ability to debate. Now, for a lot of people thats just fine, I'm just voicing my opinion.

Interesting threads come and go. Right now, I'd agree with you. There isn't much I find interesting that's going on. In a week or two, I'm sure there will be again.

I doesn't neccisarily have to be a thread with lots of discussion and people disagreeing. We can learn about as much from each other by agreeing, and shared interests and stuff.
And apperently this thread wasn't very interesting since it sank to the second page....

How long have you been lurking/posting? I guarantee that you're not the only one that has done this. True, we have toned the debate atmosphere down in the last couple years, but I still see good discussions going on. "Discussion" does not necessarily mean that disagreement exists.

To me this thread title should be rewritten as 'I dreamt of hatrack threads unraveling'. It's in iambic pentameter that way, and dreamt is just a lot cooler word than dreamed, for some reason. Every time I read this thread title, I mentally rewrite it like that. <laughs>

While it is iambic pentameter, it's not particularly pretty iambic pentameter, since it requires one to draw out unraveling more than usual. Pronounced naturally it's only nine syllables.

Oh, sorry about that! Iambic pentamater is the most popular metrical form in English. Shakespeare used it all the time, for instance. It goes like this, "bah BUM bah BUM bah BUM bah BUM". A single "bah BUM" is called an iamb, and when you put five of them in a row it's known as iambic pentameter.
Two lines together of iambic pentameter that rhyme are known as a heroic couplet. Lots of verse uses this form, too. The first Saturday of each month has of late been declared Talk in Heroic Couplets Day on Hatrack, though on the first ever TiHC day earlier this month the din of all the people NOT talking in heroic couplets reached a deafening roar. <laughs> I can't see it ever becoming hugely popular but it's sort of fun like Uruk-Haiku only not as clever. Mainly it's great practice for aspiring poets.
The line "I dreamt of hatrack threads unraveling" sounds like perfectly good iambic pentameter to me. I DO pronounce unraveling with four syllables, I think. Do most people not? The 'ing' doesn't have much stress, but having the meter be exactly singsongy regular is not great form, either. Especially if carried over for line after line. Posts: 968 | Registered: Sep 2003

ak, I just learned more in your post than in 4 years of high school and almost 5 years of COLLEGE! (exaggeration, but I think I have forgotten EVERYTHING from all my language learning and it seems to make more sense to me now anyway. )

If we do one of those with the ABABCDCDEFEFGG rhyme scheme, what sort of sonnet is that? I can't remember if that's a Spencerian sonnet or what. Does anyone know?
I think we're probably going to have to use travelling as the rhyme two lines down, you think? And we should definitely mention philotes. Eruve, it can be about your dream, and about hatrack. That would be neat!
