Mooselet is recovering, but he's gonna be an unhappy fellow for a bit. The surgery went well, everything is good, but he's in a pretty decent amount of pain, and while the medicine helps, it's not total anesthetic.
For those who haven't been following the entire Mooselet saga (the majority of which I'm not including here) -- due to a number of factors, some beyond our control and some a result of our choices, Mooselet did not get circumsized as an infant as was originally planned. Well, due to another number of factors, it was decided that for medical reasons, Mooselet would be better off having the procedure done. This morning.
We've been told that while there will be some residual pain for a while, and we'll keep giving him pain relievers, he should be up and around in a day or so. We trust this will be the case, and he'll be back to the happy and adorable Mooselet whom those of you who have met him know him to be. If not, I really need to find a job, and soon.

No! He should eat the ice cream. Ice cream is great for taking your mind off your problems. Though, I suppose you could give him one of those 5 quart pails and have him sit on it.

I'm glad to hear that things went well. I hope he will recover quickly!!

FYI, my grandpa had to be circumcised when he was 78... one year before he died of cancer. It takes a grownup a lot longer to, um recover.

You won't have to deal with midnight trips to Eckerds because your teenaged daughter who can't drive needs tampons and is waiting for you in the bathroom.

When I first read the title, I thought this was Pop's answer to having no more children. Same area, slightly higher up the ... uhm ... you know. Or down depending on which way the wind's blowing.

Oh man, I forgot about Mooslet's surgery, and knowing this was coming from Papa Moose I was wondering if this was his announcement that he was going to have the "other" snip snip done, and that the upcoming Mooslet II would be the last edition and there was no posiblilty for a Mooslet III.

Good luck to the little guy. Don't worry if you see a filmy white layer grow over in the next couple of days -- it isn't pus, but healing mucosa.

So things are ok. He had a low-grade fever when he went in, and it's spiked a couple times now, but it's most likely unrelated to the surgery. However, ibuprofen works much better than acetaminophen at controlling the temp (which we need to do), but the ibuprofen doesn't have codeine. So he's feeling some pain, he's getting the analgesic effect, but not the narcotic effect. He's good most of the time, though not really very active (unsurprisingly). Diaper changes, and especially application of the neosporin, are definitely his least favorite times. He's not eating full meals, but a decent amount nonetheless, and because of the fever we've been keeping to juice and water rather than adding milk to the mix. He threw up once yesterday morning, but has been fine since. He even slept a straight eight hours last night, which we hadn't even considered as a possibility.
Tonight he got a bath. We figured he'd yell and scream when he went into the water -- completely wrong. It was exiting the water that was the problem. We had to dry rather gingerly, which took longer than usual, and had to apply the neosporin again before closing up the diaper, so he was shivering by the time he was ready for bed. Hopefully he'll sleep through the night again, and hopefully the pain will lessen as time goes on.
For anyone who has had a child circumcised at birth (well, shortly thereafter, anyway), how has your experience differed? Because we'll be experiencing that in about a month, too.
Side notes -- Kayla, upon reading my post before submitting, I noticed that unintentional choice of words, but I decided to leave it in so someone could make a joke if she desired. Thanks for picking up on it. Bella -- that'd be Longs here -- we don't have an Eckerds anywhere nearby. Zan and AJ -- current plans are to have more (hoping for a girl), though admittedly we plan to see how this one turns out first. If he has as many issues as Mooselet did, we may adopt if we still want more. CT -- yeah, it's there, only slightly. Thanks for the warning.
To all who have sent well-wishes to any/all of us, thank you. I'm sure Mooselet will be around to thank you eventually, too, but right now he just doesn't seem to feel like it. I tell him I understand, but in a way I really can't, I guess. Thank goodness.

Super-K cried for about a minute after the snipping.
And that was the last time he cried about it. No further side effects. We kept an eye on things, did what the doctor told us, and everything turned out okay.

I think I was more bothered by the whole thing than he was. It was very red afterwards and just looked really painful to me. Mommy had to change the diapers for a day after the gauze came off. I just couldn't do it.
Lots of vaseline was the trick, which I'm sure they'll tell you. He even liked it. He would cry when his diaper was being changed, but as soon as we started smearing the vaseline, he quieted down. Posts: 221 | Registered: Mar 2003

You know, every time I see this thread's title (now that I know it isn't about a vasectomy), I think of Sir Richard Francis Burton, who had to be circumcised as an adult (early 30s, I think) for part of his disguise when he wanted to impersonate a muslim and go on pilgramage to Mecca. No anesthetic was used, although he did get drunk first.

Pop, they put a little plastic bellshaped-thing over the top when I had my son circumsized. It didn't require anything else...no vaseline, nothing. As I recall, it fell off on its own. But it's been over 10 years so maybe I'm not remembering right.
I do remember that it wasn't any big deal (no comments to my son's attributes...he just has a very high pain tolerance, and did even then. He used to whimper at getting shots, but not actually break down and cry.) No fever or anything.
I'd imagine that there's a pretty big difference between having it done when you're 3 days old as opposed to over 2 years old. I once knew a man who had it done at age 30...he said it was pretty major.

((((Mooselet)))) I have generally been anti-circimcision but both of our boys were because my husband felt strongly that they should be. Mainly because he is. Though it seems to be a moral/religious question for him (though it isn't technically because we are Christian and it's done at the hospital). Ironically, he came from a family where the women don't pierce their ears. But mine does. So... I guess we're both crazy.
The second boy had a problem with readhesion, so other mothers who saw "it" asked if he was circumcised. The problem went away eventually, but I was really aggravated about it for a while, not having wanted the circumcision to begin with.

Ouch, ouch, ouch! Why does anyone ever get this done, other than for religious reasons? To me it's just ritual genital mutilation, same as is performed on girls in Africa which we decry mightily. To me the idea seems cruel and barbaric, even. But so many otherwise wonderful parents seem to make this choice! I truly don't understand why anyone would do this (other than religious reasons, of course). Can someone please explain it to me?

The understanding I've had is that there are hygienic advantages, although paying more attention to hygiene can compensate, and some people feel that the increased sensitivity that comes with not being circumcised is worth the extra vigilance.

Believe me, the excuses for this awful practice do not hold water. I mean...besides a miniscule disease resistance and an over-hyped hygene 'advantage', it's all bull. What it IS is a form of sexual abuse, and mutilation.
