Did anyone read that article?

Some highlights.

quote:
The clingy dress, the Chanel belt, the denim mini-skirt—if they were cruising the clubs, Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie would be stunning. However, the Beverly Hills bombshells just relocated to Altus, Ark. (population: 817), so the reaction is closer to stunned.
Yep, Hilton and Richie (of Hilton Hotels and Lionel Richie) are headed for hills (and it ain't Beverly Hills we are talking about here) in a new show, "The Simple Life" set to air in December.

quote:
INSIDE THE LEDINGS’ modest farmhouse, Hilton and Richie face surprise after nasty surprise. A single bathroom. A well. “What are wells for?” asks Hilton. “Water,” says mom Janet Leding. Richie is so bewildered, she needs to check her bearings. “Do you guys hang out at Wal-Mart?” she asks. “I’ve always heard that people hang out at Wal-Mart.” The Ledings look confused. So does Hilton. “What is Wal-Mart?” she asks. “Is it, like, they sell wall stuff?”

[ROFL]

Fear not though. Apparently, these two are not nearly as ditzy as Jessica Simpson, who, it would seem, has already done a season of "reality tv" and came off as a complete airhead.

quote:
The reigning rich ditz, pop star Jessica Simpson, and husband, Nick Lachey, just signed on for a second season of MTV’s “Newlyweds.” Perhaps she wants a shot at atoning for the moment this year when she debated whether Chicken of the Sea is tuna or chicken. “I hate fish, so I didn’t understand why I liked this tuna,” Simpson tried to explain to David Letterman last week. “It doesn’t make any sense at all, I know.”

[Confused]

Dear Lord, are there really people that stupid out there?

Back to Hilton and Richie

quote:
To their credit, the girls are unfailingly polite, even when it comes to sharing that bathroom. But they do have their limits. “They tried to make us pluck a chicken and I almost barfed,” says Hilton. “We had a midnight curfew, which we broke every night,” says Richie. Where did they hang out? “The most fun place was the gas station,” says Hilton. “We met some cute country boys.” Actually, all 817 citizens of Altus got to know our intrepid cultural-exchange students. Hilton and Richie showed up more often in the local paper than they do in Liz Smith. “It was like we were Michael Jackson,” says Richie. “They wrote that our skirts were too short. They said we came to church in fur coats. It hurt my feelings. I never went to church!”
Now, this particular section of the story reminded me of Navy NCIS the other night. When being questioned about a fellow sailors death, the sailor said something along the lines of, "He was crazy. He thought he was immortal. I told him to prove it by chaining weights to his waist and walking to the shore." To which Mark Harmon asks, "Why would you do that?" The answer of course, "To win the game." Duh. Of course, the other dude was crazy, but having him kill himself in order for you to win a game, completely sane. Gotcha.

Same thing here. "How rude. They said we wore fur coats to church. As if. We were never in church." D*oh.

Also, MTV will be doing it's version of "rich people trying to act like normal people." Theirs will be called "Rich Girls" and Tommy Hilfiger's daughter will be skewered.

quote:
The problem is that as much as “Rich Girls” wants to prove that money doesn’t make adolescence any easier, it’s hard to care when the girls say things like “My dad invented cargo pants and everybody copied him” and “We had a photo shoot on the boat, the Christina O. You know Jackie O, or something? Whatshisname O—Onassis?” By the time Jaime’s prom date drinks too much and bails from the limousine, you don’t empathize with her. You want to jump out of the car, too.

HBO has also bought a documentary made by one of the Johnsons, of Johnson & Johnson, called born rich, in which he interviews rich kids, along with himself and his dad.

quote:
“Born Rich” does a thorough, if earnest, job with a touchy subject. So touchy that a casino-gambling heir named Luke Weil—who does an ugly rant about how any woman who won’t sign a prenup is an “ungrateful b—h”—sued Johnson to get his interviews removed. “I think he got pressure from his friends and family, and that made him nervous,” says Johnson. A judge dismissed the suit, which is a certain kind of justice. It would have been more fun if he’d sent Weil to share a bathroom down on the farm.
I don't know if this is funny, or sad. Stupidity, at that level anyway, is usually funny. But that much money thrown in just makes it kind of sickening. Don't these people have parents to tell them what a bad idea this is? Do they not fully grasp the concept of regret? Do they have no idea how bad this will make them look?

If nothing else, did they not see the Anna Nicole show?!?

Those shows prove that a large fortune doesn't equal good breeding. My cousin calls that genre "Look How Nouveau We Are."

I am fascinated by Newlyweds. It's like watching a car wreck. He seems like a semi-intelligent, down-to-earth guy. It's hard to see why he married her. This girl brought her Louis Vuitton bag camping! Aside from the unoriginality and mediocre taste of having one of those bags, who in the world would take it camping? I own many nice bags and I leave them at home and take my big, green North Face backpack camping. Aside from the constant complaining and whining, she left cosmetics in the tent that should have gone in the bear locker. That really makes me angry. People like her are the reason that so many bears have to be put down in national parks - she should be ashamed of herself. She also thought that buffalo wings were made out of buffalo. Either she's a complete idiot or the producers of that show hate her.

Well, I do think the producers go out of their way to show the silliest moments. Granted, you or I wouldn't do most of the specific stupid things that these people do during a day, but if we had cameras on us all the time, I'm pretty darn sure we'd all be stupid at least often enough to make a half-hour weekly TV show about it.

The producers of the show include her father, who has veto power over the final cut. I think her family is screwed up enough.

As to why he married her, some guys measure their place in the world by how hot their wife is. *shrug* That was what was most important to him.

Absolutely. Which is why you could not pay me enough to get me to do that. And why I think their dumbest move was agreeing to do the show in the first place.

You could me... in fact I would be stupid on purpose so I would get a substantial raise for the second season, and be able to retire. [Smile]

Seriously? Her father has veto over the final cut?! Does her father hate her?

I was also saddened/amused when she failed to understand that her record label was telling her that her single was awful. I had to mute the t.v. when they showed her recording it.

And why I don't feel bad about making fun of them.

Man, I'm going to have to check out that Jessica Simspon show. I wonder if they'll do reruns. When is it on?

Oh, and Mrs. M. that is exactly the reason I won't even let my husband try out for any of those Survivor type shows. He would make a fool of himself and the media would be camped out on my lawn! The horror! I don't understand what possesses these people to do it in the first place, other than sheer stupidity, which, as you say, is a valid justification for watching and making fun of them. I'm intrigued by Paris Hilton, and have no idea why.

I think I mostly just want to hear her talk. Since I don't have access to a TV, all I've seen from her are pictures on the web and articles like the one linked. She comes off as a total spoiled brat, and she's not even that pretty, but I still want to see her on TV for at least one episode sometime.

As for Jessica Simpson, I know very little about her, but assuming that someone only cares about how hot their wife is because the girl is an airhead is a bit harsh. There is way more to picking a wife than an IQ test. Personally, out of the girls I've dated (or been friends with), the ones who were most book-smart were not always the ones who were the most enjoyable to spend time with, or the best people in general. A girl can be a great person, a good wife, even an excellent mother without being a rocket-scientist. The question for me would be whether Miss Simpson has redeeming qualities, which I really don't know.

Now about people wanting to be on reality TV shows, its not like everyone who is on one is portrayed as a complete moron. In fact, I think I'm safe in assuming that on any given group reality show, I would be the smartest person on there, or at the very least in the top two or three. That means they would have plenty of footage of my fellow cast members making fools of themselves so as not to show my stupidity [Smile] . I'd say that one of the things which make reality shows popular are people liking some of the castmates. An example would be me and Elizabeth Filarski, who I still to this day have a crush on.

The shows which focus on just one person (or a couple people) are different, but its not like I have anything to hide. I would be thrilled at the fame, and even if they made me look foolish in the entire show, I wouldn't mind much.

Reverse "Beverly Hillbillies" or what? I thought that show was on verge of offensive years ago and my impression of this newest Kulture is even lower.

But then, I am an old reactionary, don't you see.

Why don't they do a show following a supersmart person and see what they're like? I'd be interested to know if supergeniuses still waste time watching TV like the rest of us mortals.

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=797&ncid=763&e=8&u=/eo/20031027/en_tv_eo/12783

quote:
Richie (daughter of Lionel) was busted on a felony heroin-possession charge and a misdemeanor count of driving with a suspended license while motoring down the Pacific Coast Highway in her Mercedes-Benz last February.

Upon being stopped, she told cops she didn't have her driver's license. A subsequent search of her wallet turned up two balloons. A red balloon, tied into a knot, had a slit in it and contained nothing. A white balloon contained heroin, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department confirmed at the time.

Earlier this month, the poor little rich girl pleaded guilty to both counts.

On October 8, Richie was sentenced to probation for lack of a valid license and "deferred entry of judgment" for the drug charge, which means she has to attend a drug-diversion program, according to a spokesperson for Los Angeles' Superior Courthouse.

Lionel's offspring will have to report to court on December 5, just three days after her riches-to-rags series debuts on Fox, for a progress report. Richie's time remaining in rehab will be determined at this court appearance.

In fact, Richie was out on $10,000 bail when she and fellow socialite slummer Hilton descended on Altus, Arkansas (population: 817), last spring to shoot six episodes where they milked cows, waited tables and expressed their general amazement at working for a living.

There's a show along the same lines that looks considerably more interesting -- because it was conceived and directed by someone "Born Rich" (the title of the show, on HBO).
