I'm clearing out old and usless files on my computer to clear up memory space. I found a folder in windows called "temporary internet files". It takes up alot of room on my hard drive and I was wondering what would happen if I deleted the files that were in it.

So if you know what would happen please tell me.

Those can be deleted - your computer saves pages you visit so they don't take as long to load when you go back. It's good to clean them out once in awhile.

Clear out the files in the periodically -- but don't delete the folder itself -- just the files. If you remove the folder, then IE isnt' real sure where it put it's cached files...

If you are running IE 6, then you can also clear temp internet files from within the IE window itself -- choose TOOLS - INTERNET OPTIONS - Click on the DELETE FILES button under temporary internet files, and check the box to delete all offline content. That will do the same thing you are trying to do.

Ok I deleted the files and now it's almost completely empty but when I look at the folder's properties it says it has 130,000 files and takes up about 500MB, when all I can see in the folder is about 25 files, and I have it set so it shows all files, hidden or otherwise.

See that little checkbox on the bottom that says "Erase Internet"? Don't check that. Actually,...well, no.

If you don't want the cache to take up so much space, go into Tools, Internet Options, Settings, and use the slide to tell it how much space to use.

Start Menu > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup

This utility works pretty well. You should run it every once in a while. It's so easy to use, no wonder it's.. err, never mind.

If you want to get rid of a bunch of junk on your computer, use Spybot S&D. It is much more robust than disk cleanup and will cover more than it does, it removes spyware, usage tracks, and registry inconsistencies (did I spell that right?).
By default it just searches for spyware, but by clicking on Settings (in the side-menu) then File Sets, and checking every box, it will do evrything disk cleaner can do and a lot more.
You should update the reference file about once a month by clicking on Internet Update and downloading the file.
I just felt like whoring out this program because EVERYONE should have it if they want a secure, reliable computer.
