And now, I can say that I enjoy Radiohead (if I like two full albums of one band's material, then they go on the "Bands that I Enjoy" list).
I've wanted to enjoy them, and I can without blemish of conscience say that it's YOUR fault. There are a lot of people on this board that I admire who also like Radiohead, so I figured there must be something to it. But I couldn't get enough samples from another album (I already have The Bends) to help me decide one way or the other - and I very rarely go out and purchase a CD sight-unheard.

After many years of loving this cd, Paranoid Android is my favorite. The spots where it goes to sevens for three bars are just so great! As is the bridge or whatever you would call it with the "rain down, rain down, come on rain down on me, from a great height" vocals. The transition to that beautiful bridge, with its haunting harmonies, and then back to the rocking guitar just rules!
Does everyone else picture "that's it sir, you're leaving" as being something a teacher says to a smart mouthed student when sending him out of the room? "The yuppies networking, the panic, the vomit", <laughs> I've felt just like that in so many business meetings.
I love a whole lot of tracks on that cd. I have the problem of thinking the best one is whichever one I happen to be listening to at the time. But Paranoid Android is my very favorite. "When I am king you will be first against the wall, with your opinion which is of no consequence at all." I love Radiohead. They kick glutes.

The one thing that really got in the way of my full enjoyment of the CD when I first heard it was how so much of the music is, while not dissonant, done in flats and other strange keys and progressions. As a semi-serious musician, I appreciate this (and I do note they tend to use more traditional chord/key progressions, instead of what's "traditional" in the rock genre - which totally rules, because it irks me that rock has such a short musical memory), but when I first heard them it was very hard to listen to.
I still can't listen to Airbag. I've tried, but the combination of their odd melodies and lots of dissonance makes it painful to sit through. When the pour on the dissonance is when I tend to tune out, with the exception of Karma Police.

Lime, the true test is if you listen to Fitter Happier every time or skip it.
Paranoid Android was the song that got me hooked on Radiohead. There are so many good ideas in that one. What's funny is that there are classical artists doing renditions of the song. I've heard a classical piano version, and I have the string quartet version of the album. Amazing stuff.
Kid A and Amnesiac will reveal where your true loyalties are, however. *ominous stare*

During one of my earlier "trying out Radiohead" bouts, I got the Kid A and Amnesiac mp3s from some guy on campus who had the stroke of brilliance to share his entire hard drive. Burned 'em to CD and listened to them for a while. I remember liking them, but wondering why they decided to go towards more of a techno-trance kinda thing. Now that I'm into The Bends and OK Computer, I wish I hadn't lost the CDs in one of the many college->home->college moves, and the mp3s in a Total System Apocalypse.
So I think I like Kid and Amnesiac, but I'd have to wrap my brain around them for a few days first.
And I do listen to Fitter, Happier, most of the time. I need to sort my playlist properly: right now it's jumbled and I've been learning to play some of the individual tracks, so I've done a lot of skipping around. Posts: 753 | Registered: Mar 2001

I like "Fitter, Happier" too, and always listen to it, but there are a few other tracks I do skip. I listen to 1,2,3,4, then skip 5 and listen to 6 and 7 then skip 8,9,and 10 and listen to 11 and 12. I like some of those skipped songs but just wore them out. I've listened to that cd intently over 1000 times, I'm positive. It's probably my pick for the best cd ever. Ever.

The piano version was actually played by a jazz pianist. I heard it on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic show. I think you can find the recording here. I haven't done a whole lot of research into finding alternative renditions of Radiohead songs. One of my colleagues is into that kind of stuff a lot more than I am. He called me over to his cube when they starting playing the song over Internet broadcast.
The strings version is called "Strung Out on OK Computer" and you can find it at Amazon. I have to admit I like the original music better. But this classical interpretation does give you a sense of how complex Radiohead's music is.
ak: You skip over Let Down? That's one of my favorite Radiohead songs. Somehow it always reminds me of some futuristic city with hovercars ala Fifth Element. I think it has such a mellow, smoothly depressing feel to it. For the only music class I ever took in college, I based the song I had to write on its long descending ramp feel.
I also think No Surprises is unskippable. And the music video for that one is one of my all time favorites.
