I don't know if anyone here has ever played Metal Gear Solid. Although I'm not a fanatical gamer, it was one of my two favorite games for Playstation, and I probably beat it about 100 times. The second I got a Playstation 2, I got Metal Gear Solid 2, and I've probably beaten that one about 100 times. So I was looking around yesterday, and I found out that the next Metal Gear game is coming out in March of next year. I had no idea. If you've played these games, before reading any more, see the trailer for the game here.

[The Wave]

Notice anything familiar? Yes, they're redoing the original game for the Gamecube, and it looks amazing. It kind of makes me feel old to think that when I played the first game those blocky graphics looked so state-of-the-art to me. Heck, I remember when the Super Mario Bros graphics looked amazing. But this trailer makes one of my old favorites look like a completely new game. I'm so excited. Almost thou persuadest me to be a Gamecube owner.

There's only one thought that gives me pause. It's too bad that they have to do it with the Gamecube controller. One of my favorite advancements for MGS2 was the way they took advantage of the PS2 controller, using every button, with its pressure-sensitive capabilities, to maximize efficiency and ease of use. I was kind of hoping they'd redesign the buttons for the new version to use the MGS2 setup, but then I realized that they're missing a couple shoulder buttons and the d-pad and main buttons are not pressure sensitive. Oh, well. C'est la vie. Beggars can't be choosers. Now I just have to figure out whether I'm going to have to take control of my friend's Gamecube in march, or how I'm going to explain the purchase of an entirely new console for a single game to my wife.

[Hail] Metal Gear... *drools*

Ohhhh.... God yes. I am kicking myself for not going Gamecube. Although... (huggles her PS2) my MGS2 makes it all worth it. And Solid Snake's tasty behind. Ohh.. the polygons...

Well anyway, my best friend's going to get one... Moochy moochy!!

MGS2 was so pathetic.

The first half or so of the game was really awesome, then it turned all Japanese and got super weird. Why did they ruin what's-his-face's character by tossing in a little story of motherly incest and brother/sister lovin? That was just bizarre and totally pointless. Why was there so much pointless and lenghty dialogue? Why was I supposed to care about Raiden and Rose's supposed relationship? I never bought into that and skipped over all of the dialogue. What was up with the Doc Oc impression that Solidus Snake suddenly, out of nowhere, pulled at the end?

I did like blowing up the Metal Gear, though. That was muy bueno!

I loved MGS2. Loved loved loved. Sure, I wouldn't watch the movie. But the story was vaguely interesting enough to hold my attention the first time I played it, and I've skipped it every other time. I dug the crazy bad guys (did you know that the voice for Vamp was the guy that got his head blown off in Pulp Fiction, and Samurai Jack?) I dug seeing the General blow a fuse at the end, and hearing Otacon make fun of Mei Ling from the previous game. Some of the funniest stuff I've ever seen in a video game. I love the detail put into everything. The graphics and sound were amazing... I felt like I was walking around in the middle of the ocean on a bright summer day. I love how you can go into a kitchen and shoot a box of fruit, and it will dump fruit on the floor, then you can shoot all the fruit and shoot all of the shot bits of fruit, or how you can shoot seagulls until your girlfriend calls you and gets mad at you for abusing the animals, and you have to call back and apologize before you can save the game again. There's stuff like that all over the place. Like I said, I'm not a big gamer, but I've never seen a game with so much detail programmed into every room. Most of all, though, I just love sneaking up behind people and plugging them. I'm not a violent person. Maybe it's because I take it all out in MGS2.

So, yeah, I won't argue too much about the story, and the silly "I knew you'd do that so I did this..." "Oh, yeah, well I knew you did that, so I did this instead..." "Oh, yeah, well, little did you know, you were my pawn in this game all along..." bits. But I only watched those once. I love being able to skip to the good parts. What a swell game. [Big Grin]

I got MGS2 for XBox a few months ago and found it to be a reasonable game... until the end. I still use that game as an example as to why Japanese video games are almost always completely borked. I thought someone had secretly coated my controller in LSD which absorbed itself into my sweaty palms. I still am unsure about what exactly happened in the end, except that a lot of profound things were said that flew right over me.

In any case, the gameplay was awesome and I can see the draw to go through and get everything (all the dogtags, secret stuff, etc...).

This article is definitely a worthwhile read if you think that Metal Gear Solid 2's storyline was stupid, without reason and totally uncool. As Penny Arcade pointed out in their usual style, the game doesn't make sense. I still love that PA comic, but after reading the article at the end of the first link, I have an appreciation for what Kojima-san was doing with it, and if I could find my bloody disc, I'd play through it again with a big grin on my face. I can appreciate postmodernism, but only if I'm bright enough to know it when it happens to me. [Smile]

I keep telling myself I'm gonna pick up MGS2: Substance once it's in the bargin bin. And I'm gonna, darn it (for the PC, 'cause I can).
