Does anyone know what the song from the opening scenes of Casino is? I'm thinking it's from Handel's Messiah, or maybe it's Bach, but I'd like to get a definite name. It's been on this crappy energy bar commercial recently and it's been driving me nuts. I should know this.

I've never seen Casino, but I went here and the only piece that seems like the one you're describing is the one from St. Matthew's Passion. Unfortunately, the version of the Passion that I have is in English, and my German is rusty enough that I'm not sure which piece is "Wir setzen uns mit Thraenen nieder" (I don't think it's a word-for-word translation anyway), but I suspect it's the one that my version translates as "In Tears of Grief, Dear Lord We Leave Thee." If you give me a few minutes, I'll post a clip and let you listen to see if it's the right one.

Hmm, I just checked St. Matthew's passion from a tape I had, it doesn't sound like it.... Maybe it's a different movement. If it has movements, of course.

This is a slow computer, but I'd still take a gander at the link, if you find it.

Sorry it took longer than I thought. My file converter was acting buggy, and uploading a track that long at 128 kbs is a bit tedious, so I had to find another way. Anyway, if you go here, you should be able to hear what it sounds like. If it's not it, let me know and I'll try a couple of other tracks on the chance that my translation is at fault.

Good luck [Smile]

Hmm, it says the page can't be found... But I figure I'll just buy a best of Bach CD or something tommorrow, anyway, when I get some new headphones. Good studying music.

If anyone else is reading this thread, try the link and see if you get anything. It's working on my computer.

I found a track listing of St Matthew's Passion in German, and according to that, I posted the right track, so that's good. However, now that you have me listening to it again, I'm tempted to post more tracks just so you can hear them. I love the Passion. It's perhaps my favorite piece from one of my all-time favorite composers (certainly my personal favorite pre-20th century composer). If anyone doesn't have this, go get a good version. It will blow your mind. Not since Return of the King will 3 hours fly by so quickly. Thanks for making me listen again.

By the way, if you want to hear this piece, don't buy a Best of Bach CD. The passion usually takes up 3 discs. This is one of the highlights, but it's unlikely to make it on your average "best of" CD. I've seen it on some, but not most.

I found some independent verification that the link works on computers other than mine. Try it again. If it doesn't work for you, let me know. [Smile]

Hey Book. I don't know if you're still interested, but if you are, and for some reason you're still unable to get the version that I put up, I was looking around and I found a website with a cheesy midi version of this piece. It doesn't sound great, and you won't hear the voices, but it'll give you some idea what the piece sounds like. Let me know if it's the one that you're looking for.

I looked up Casino on CDNOW and it appears like the piece of music you are looking for is called "Matthaus Passion".
