Just check first to see who is most critical. Rescue the code reds first, then yellows, then greens (the greens will go yellow, and the yellows will go red if you take too long). And the winch man will give out if you take too long.
I got them all and almost to landing when I ran out of gas.

*scratches head* It makes no sense. I can't return to base. The helicopter just crashes every time.

I can't get the stupid thing to hover. Real helicopters can hover in one spot. Mine likes the ground too, but the explosions are pretty.

You can't totally hover, but I can get close by tapping lightly repeatedly on the UP arrow (and control your tilt).
I don't know why you are having trouble landing -- I could -- except the time I ran out of fuel -- then your helicopter just goes straight down no matter what you do..

I'm not out of fuel. Apparently you have to be exactly level, even on the landing pad, or you "crash". I don't care...this game is too tough for me.

I just almost had level one, but one of the people was about to die (they had been a yellow but went down to red while I was getting others and I hadn't noticed) so I rushed and my winch-man sustained multiple injuries.

Yes, PC, I played Choplifter. I had a joystick, and you could hover. Landing was easier, too--if you tried to land on the landing pad, you landed, you didn't crash. I think maybe that was the case even if you were plummeting out of the sky.
