Am I a total elitist if I want the word "Shinda" to apply only to SoCal events? Should I embrace the spirit of Hatrack togetherness? Or should I defend what has become a SoCal jatraquero tradition?
I mean, on the one hand keeping the Shindae in SoCal would make it easier to keep track of the list and it might also make it more likely that new people would attend them, since obviously everyone wants to see a genuine Hatrack Shinda at least once in their lives. Still, get-togethers are a good thing wherever they are, and maybe letting other people use the name will encourage more such events.

Protect that copyright vigourously now, saxy, before it becomes industry standard, like "Kleenex."

Did you guys invent the word shinda to refer to SoCal Hatrack events, or was it around before then? What does it mean?

For the first So-Cal get together, LadyDove got a cake made. The woman apparently did not have the word "shindig" in her vocabulary, and wrote "Hatrack Shinda" on the cake. Ever since, every So-Cal get-together (1) has a cake, and (2) is called a shinda.
The last cake had Shinda VII written on it. They are keeping track of who goes to which.

Jon Boy, you're so transparent. Please try to control your raging crush on me.
Tom, I suppose I could argue that the term "jatraquero" had become widely used before I even registered, so whatever I think about the issue is irrelevant. That would be a cop-out, though. Anyway, I already gave two reasons that keeping the Shindae in SoCal would be good--at least, good for me: relative ease of historical documentation and possible increased appeal for Southern California Hatrack events.

After hearing both sides of the testimony, I've decided that us Arizonans should come up with our own, super-cool term for a get together and let the SoCal'ers have their Shinda.

And miss out on all that extra income? I'm just providing a service, man; you're the one who's out of control.

Out of interest, is any Hatrack gathering in SoCal a "shinda," even if none of the attendees have been to any other "shinda?" If not, is any gathering at which one person who has attended a "shinda" a "shinda," regardless of location?
Or is a proper "shinda" only a "shinda" if it takes place in Southern California AND includes at least one attendee who has been to one other "shinda?"

Clearly, the term "Shinda" should only apply to SoCal Hatrack gatherings! If we allow non-SoCal gatherings to be termed "Shindas", the next thing you know polygamy will be legalized. It's a slipery slope, no two ways about it.

You know, I thought the criterion for it being a Shinda was that there had to be a Shinda Cake, but if I recall correctly there was no cake when we hung out with Icarus and Cor at Downtown Disney.

Is that all I am to you, Saxon? Just another source of income? That's not what you said in your emails. Were they all lies?

I think the last Shinda was number VI, kat, even though it was the seventh one (Shinda-IIIb happened at rivka's). There was a cake for the Disney Shinda, but it was decided that it would be too festive, considering the accident on Big Thunder that day.
I think "Shinda" applies only to SoCal gatherings that are organized through Hatrack, but there's no particular reason it should be my call. But if the battle over the term Shinda is going to be anything like the battle over the term "marriage" (as a subset of the battle over same-sex unions), it won't be worth the fight to me.

I still think Greensboro should have CardFest. Personally, I've lived here for four years and still haven't met the man or his wonderful family.
