I've seen this theory proposed before, but a researcher has studied the data and found some proof of the "grandmother hypothesis". This article summarizes a piece in Nature (which I couldn't find online!) that discusses the work.

I always thought the point of grandmothers was to have children who would have children.

The point of my grandmothers was to take the place of my mother, who died when I was a baby.

Another point of grandmothers(mine, anyway) was, and still is, to provide a place where I am the smartest, most beautiful person in the entire universe. Believe me, I need that place!

Grandmothers are for teaching youth bad habbits that won't get us thrown in jail (like j-walking, thats one of the many bad habbits my granny taught me). bottom line, Grandmothers are for having fun, and sometimes for replacing biological parents.

My nice grandmother died of cancer when I was 4.

My other grandmother lived a very long time, making everyones life hell the entire time. Not content with having made my father neurotic and self destructive, she tried to crush the spirits of her grandchildren too.

I fear that I have no good grandmother stories. [Frown]

On the plus side, I do have one kickass grandfather.

Slash,
My husband had a grandmother who destroyed the spirit(or tried) of his mother. I always disliked her for that. Now that she is dead, she is revered by everyone as the smartest, most wonderful woman in the universe. Truth is, she was a royal _______.

Grandmothers are often nicer to their grandchildren than they were to their own children. They can have a lot of the fun, and not have to worry about the repurcussions of spoiling. My grandmothers both spoiled me with love, but were very clear when I was out of line. I know I am extremely lucky. I have always, seriously, thought of them as God's consolation prize for losing my mother.

I am also EXTREMELY lucky to be forty years old and still have them. My world will be rocked when they are gone.

Liz
