I've finally done it! I put pink highlights in the layers of my hair!
I'm still going to look into the lavenders that you all were kind enough to find for me, but the salon I went to only had dark purple so I went with a rosy pink. I'll probably do the lavender once this fades.
It is super liberating! Pictures to come later.

My junior year of high school, my redheaded best friend and I decided to run for student body president & vice. My hair at the time was a rather dark brown, but I've always had the complexion of a red head. So - I had my hair and eyebrows professionally done and went totally Little Orpan Annie. I put up signs saying "Morgan is dyeing to be President," and had a whole campaign of red-haired cartoon characters endorsing us. We put a ton of work into it and even had a huge banner printed up that said "Vote Red," complete with quasi-communist insignia.
Yeah, we didn't make it past the primaries. But that was because we were nerds. Funny, creative, nerds, but still nerds.

I have both a deep blue and a purple gel that I've been wearing occasionally in my hair since I was too chicken to get anything "permanent" until now. This is so much better, though!
You have to watch out with purple, though, because, imo, there are a lot of them that look like a bad red dye job.

I wonder what my parents would do if I came home with radically different color hair.
The more frightening prospect is that a few of the people I hang out with at the club are into short hair. Like ear length OR buzz cut on girls. So they've been hinting that I should drop my halfway-down-the-back hair for something fuzzy.

I had blue streaks in my hair sophmore year. They were neat. A light blue that when well with my blond hair.

My husband would have a raging conniption! He's not as wonderfully hip as some husbands. He's wonderfully conservative.
I got my ear cartilage pierced while in LA two years ago. He begged and pleaded with me to remove it. I removed it, but only because it was infected and hurting like crazy. That's the only reason!!

Allegra? You had blue streaks? I remember a dark reddish color but not blue. Maybe I was too focused on other things, that year was slightly weird.

How cool! I knew a girl in high school who had a streak of turquoise in her black, black hair. It was absolutely lovely. Me, I've been toying with going red. My strawberry-blond highlights have just about grown out, and while I do like my natural color, it's awfully dark and I'd love to lighten it up some. In the past I've gotten professional highlights, but I was thinking of trying an at-home thing. Does anyone have any experiences with dyeing their own hair?

I've always done my own dyeing (being too cheap to cough up the money required for salon color-work). It takes some practice - you have to be really thorough or you'll end up with some color variation. It also helps to have someone handy to help wash off the dye that gets on your skin (because it will stain it). I like to use the semi-permanent (wash-out) dyes so I don't have to really worry about roots (and it isn't as destructive to my hair), but since it is a wash-out, it does fade. I've been dyeing my hair a bright purple/red for the last 6 months or so and everyone really likes it. I use one of the temporary dyes (Natural Instincts), even though it doesn't ever seem to wash out completely (probably because it is darker than my natural color). I tend to redo it every 6-8 weeks. It's really vibrant for the first week or so and then fades, but I like it.

I dyed mine red for most of highschool. I was a Clairol nice'n easy (yeah, go ahead and joke) 111 Natural Medium Auburn girl. ludosti's suggestion of a helper is very true. Especially if you have a lot of hair to manage. I would also suggest that you wear something you intend to never wear again for any purpose other than dying your hair.

I love pink and blonde together and I love the way you did it. It looks great!
I had to stop coloring my hair b/c we're trying to conceive (I had to put off the anti-curl perm, too) and I miss it. I forgot how light my natural color actually is. In '02, I had ever-so-subtle dark, dark purple highlights. My colorist was so brilliant that they actually looked natural. I think that lavender is a much better shade for blondes.

You aren't supposed to dye your hair when you're pregnant, I think.
I used to dye my hair red. I also used to be around people during the day that were neither (1)female, or (2) over fifty, pot-bellied, and going bald. This is no longer true.

You caught me, Mrs. M! I think you just may be right. I'll have to add this to the list. I'm pretty thrilled that I pulled it off without being too self conscious about it. And I haven't even been fired from my job! *grin*
