I just joined hatrack about a week ago, and since joining I have herd the term "hat crack" at first I thought it was funny that someone could become addicted to a forum. After a week, I now understand, but here is my question, Why is hatrack so addictive? is it just that we have no other way to socialize with our peers, or is it a government conspiracy? Let’s hear some theories and other nonsense comments.

It's the nicotine. They add it to make you addicted. Like the stuff they spray on top of Doritios.

I'm not addicted. After all, it isn't addiction if you lurk obsessively but refrain from posting.

Incidentally, PSI (re: how did I know your child's name was Czech), you posted once that your daughter's name is Anicka (may have been spelled differently). I, of course, stored that piece of information for later use in the stalker file I'm keeping on you. Don't let that make you nervous, though. I have a stalker file on most Jatraqueros.

Oh, man! With the amount of personal info I have scattered around Hatrack, your file on me must be huge, Lissande!

For the last couple of months, every time I start up AIM my computer screams in agony and bursts into flames. It's very much on its last legs, poor thing. Next time I see anything resembling a large amount of money I need to get a new one. Preferably one that doesn't run the Windows ME of Death.
Otherwise I'd be chatting, though

pooka: *groan* I guess someone had to do it, eh?
I have been wondering myself why I am so addicted. I had some thoughts: Hatrack seems to have the condensced essence of what I enjoy most in human interaction with out many of the things I don't enjoy. Here people are judged by what they have to say, not how they look, dress, act, sound, etc. To some extent, you can look past all the distracting stuff and get to the heart of what is important.
The people drawn here are really cool to begin with. They have developed a compelling culture of their own. The conversations here are just plain fun. Whether they are serious, fascinating, or just fluff, they are highly enjoyable.
Mix it all together, and you get hours upon hours of enriching entertainment. If by sticking around you make some really cool friends that pass from internet acquaintence to RL, then hey, what a bonus!

I am developing a theory about Hatrack. In my gifted and talented education classes, I learned that g/t kids need to be with each other. Considering that these folks are a small percentage, that means there aren't a lot of them around. Also, many smart kids develop ways of dealing with their "differences" that keep them hidden. People are afraid of differences because they make others less predictable.
Hatrack is a place where we weirdos and misfits who get pleasure from using our brains can let it all hang out. We crave intellectual discussion, mental play, and connecting with others who are just as "different" as we are. Of course it's addicting! I don't know about you, but it is RARE for me to find people to hang out with and just be myself - flirty, playful, quirky, and smart. I'm usually downplaying one or more aspects of myself so I don't scare people. At Hatrack, I don't have to do that.

Well, kat agrees with me. Anyone else? Come on, there's gotta be at least one Hatracker who tells me I'm full of bull!

That's the drawing power of any message board. As specialized group that couldn't function in the real world because geographically we're too spread out.

Ain't that the truth! Where else but the internet would I find a large group of people as crazy about guinea pigs as I am?

Really? Where? Cool.
Geek, Nerd and Dork have now officially become Gnork, as it covers all three, and it's such a fabulous word.

Yeah, I think it's the fact that hatrackers tend to be smart, funny, fascinating, and really good hearted too. Worldsavers with huge hearts. The sort of people I love most of all. In real life you might meet one at a time, at long intervals. Here they are all over the place. It's the coolest thing! I don't see ever leaving either. Every time I think about maybe going away, then I worry about whom I might miss. Then I just have to check back and see what's going on.
